JUNETEENTH 2021! Juneteenth celebration 2021| why is it called Juneteenth| Juneteenth history|date

Since the Fourth of July will take place on a Sunday this year, the federal holiday will be moved to Monday 5 July. This is customary when a federal holiday where many public and private workers are offered the day off, falls on a weekend.

For those who may need to make a run to a government office or a bank, errands should be completed before Saturday, as Sunday and Monday many offices will be closed. Most major banks in the United States follow the same holiday schedule as the Federal Reserve since electronic bank transfers are routed through them. Since they rely on The Fed for these actions, following their holiday schedule helps ensure customers see the quickest results.

The Fed, like most other government bodies, observes the Monday following a public holiday, should it fall on a Sunday. Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo will operate normally on Saturday but will be closed on Monday.

What Does Juneteenth Commemorate

The holiday celebrates the emancipation of African Americans from slavery. June 19, 1865, was when Major General Gordon Granger reached Galveston, Texas, and declared that the Civil War was over. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation two and half years earlier on January 1, 1863, but many slaveholders didnt free their slaves.

Best Buy corporate offices will be closed Friday, and U.S. Bank branches will be closed Saturday, as more Minnesota companies add Juneteenth to their list of holidays.

For many businesses, the development coincided with pledges to increase diversity and inclusion efforts following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last May.

Target last year made Juneteenth a company holiday, and Best Buy made it a volunteer day, saying it would become a holiday this year.

U.S. Bank branches closed early last year, and on Thursday, the company decided to close branches on Saturday which would normally be open a half-day since it’s now a federal holiday.

“Juneteenth is an opportunity for all Americans to pause and reflect,” Greg Cunningham, chief diversity officer of the Minneapolis-based bank wrote in a blog post. “Despite the painful origins of the holiday, its significance and what we as a nation stopped by ending legal slavery should be owned and celebrated by all.

“We can do that best by making this the moment of building strength together. By recommitting to actions that spread the promise and potential of our democracy to more, we will all reap the benefits of living in a healthier, safer and more fruitful nation.”

Because it falls on a Saturday this year, Best Buy is marking Juneteenth on Friday. Store employees working that day will be paid time-and-a-half wages.

Finally, you can also inquire about whether or not there are certain branches remaining open even on holidays. Bank branches located inside of a grocery store, for example, will often keep the same hours as the store, even if most of that bankâs other branches are closed. So check to see if there are any nearby store locations that you can visit during bank holidays.

Companies Making Juneteenth A Paid Holiday Say It’s The Right Thing To Do

Juneteenth Federal Holiday 2021 : Aa6qvpfez9rgzm ...

A Mercer survey released on June 3 found that 9% of surveyed companies planned to observe Juneteenth as a holiday in 2021 the same percentage as planned to observe Columbus Day/Indigenous People’s Day, a long-established federal holiday.

For some businesses notably Nike observing Juneteenth means actually closing retail establishments. For others, like Starbucks and Best Buy, locations will remain open, but employees receive extra pay for working.

Other companies say they’re recognizing Juneteenth without actually observing it. Google is not giving people the day off but is encouraging them to cancel meetings. AT&T held internal events recognizing the holiday but also encouraged people to use their existing leave to take Juneteenth off.

Rosa Nunez, the director of diversity, equity and inclusion at the law firm Foley Hoag, argues that nodding to the holiday without paid leave is insufficient.

“It should be a paid holiday and not just a check-the-box holiday added to your calendar,” says Nunez, whose organization began observing Juneteenth as a paid day off last year. “You really have to be meaningful and authentic in order to be impactful.”
