But your list of things to do may also include picking up a few things at stores that are open on Memorial Day, serving up some delicious Memorial Day recipes, or stopping by a bank. According to Banks.org, almost all of the major banks across America will be closed in observance of the federal holiday which falls on the last Monday of May each year. However, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to have quick access to your cash if you need it. Though you likely won’t be able to walk into your local branch to withdraw or deposit any cash or checks on May 31, you will still be able to do so by heading to the ATM or using your bank’s mobile app. If you are making a deposit using the ATM though, just be sure to remember that you won’t have access to those funds until the transaction is posted on the next business day.

The USA.gov federal website says: “Many government offices close on federal holidays and some private businesses may close as well.
Customers can access online services as well as ATM machines at most banks for any banking needs on Memorial Day.
Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, some bank branches may be closed temporarily, while others may be offering limited services and be operating on a reduced schedule. Check your local branch before visiting.
The U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation advises: “In difficult circumstances, some banks may need to temporarily limit operations to protect the health of their employees and customers. This may include closing a lobby, converting to drive-thru only services, or encouraging customers to use ATMs or digital channels to access their services.
“Regardless of the bank’s operating conditions, your money is insured by the FDIC. Deposits with an FDIC-insured bank or savings institution will continue to be protected up to at least $250,000,” the FDIC says.

With Memorial Day being a federal holiday, the U.S. Postal Service is closed on Monday meaning no mail delivery.
UPS is closed pickup and delivery services are closed, as well as store locations. However, UPS Express Critical service is available.
Similarly, FedEx also observes Memorial Day with all services closed on Monday except FedEx Custom Critical. FedEx Office stores may be open but with modified hours.

The holiday traditionally honors the people who have died while serving in the United States military.
General John Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance in 1868, according to History.com.
“The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he said.
