- check balances
- deposit checks
Your bank may offer additional digital services check its website for information.
Keep in mind that during the COVID-19 pandemic, many banks are restricting branch access even on regular business days. Some locations are temporarily closed others may have limited hours, closed lobbies or appointment-only service. Check the branch locator on your bank’s website or call your local branch to find out about its operations.
Here are some other things to know about banking, or not banking, on federal holidays.
Is Presidents Day A Bank Holiday
Presidents Day is a federal holiday and a bank holiday but that doesnt necessarily mean your local bank will shut its doors. It only means that the Federal Reserve System wont open or make any transactions. Most banks follow the lead of the Federal Reserve and close on the 10 major federal holidays, including Presidents Day.
Its a three-day weekend for many businesses, so follow this guide, but also call your local branch ahead of time to confirm before you assume itll be open or closed when you need it.
Banks Closed On Presidents Day
The vast majority of major regional and national banks are closed for Presidents Day, which falls on Feb. 21. The following banks have all confirmed that their branches will not be open.
- American National Bank
- Wells Fargo
Even if your bank is closed on Presidents Day, dont panic. You can handle most transactions online, on your banks mobile app or through an ATM, many of which will allow you to withdraw cash and deposit money or checks on holidays. Its also likely that your bank will have representatives available to answer your call on its customer service line.
Keep in mind that its not just banks you have to worry about on Presidents Day: Federal agencies like Social Security offices and the U.S. Postal Service will be closed. However, national retailers and most local ones will be open.

Do Transactions Go Through On Bank Holidays
Most banking transactions don’t process on bank holidays, regardless of whether you use an online or brick-and-mortar bank.
Ally Bank, for instance, doesn’t let you make any money-related transactions on federal holidays. The online banking platform Chime also has a list of holidays when it can’t process direct deposits.
Transactions at brick-and-mortar banks like Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America won’t be processed until the next business day. Business days are weekdays when branches are in operation.
So, instead of hinging on a lagging direct deposit, you may want to come up with a backup plan in case the transaction gets delayed.
Businesses Closed On A Few Holidays
Garbage and recycling pickup: For customers with curbside service, there is usually no garbage pickup on New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas and most dump sites are closed. However, garbage service is only delayed by one day. Therefore, if your regular pickup day falls on or after the holiday that week, adjust your pickup day to one day later. On all other holidays, garbage pickup is not adjusted.
Grocery stores are sometimes closed on New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, though closures may vary widely even among chain stores. If they are open, they may have adjusted hours, opening later or closing earlier.
Restaurants are sometimes closed on New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, except those located in hotels. Restaurants open on holidays may have special menus or hours.
Retail stores and shopping malls are usually closed on New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. On other Federal holidays, they are open and offer big sales and discounts.

Most locally owned retailers will be open during normal hours too, so you’re in luck if you want to get some shopping done. The same goes for restaurants, except of course those that are normally closed on Mondays. Don’t forget to grab your mask before you leave the house! If you’re staying home, keep in mind that many online retailers offer big sales on Presidents’ Day on items like mattresses, appliances, furniture, and more.
Where Can I Get Cash When Banks Are Closed
Branches are closed on federal holidays, but ATMs aren’t. If you have a debit or ATM card, you can still use a machine to take out cash during the holidays.
If you’re out of town, you can also use a debit card to get cash back at a store if you don’t have any free ATMs nearby. That way, you don’t have to pay an out-of-network ATM fee if your bank doesn’t reimburse charges.

How To Access Your Money If Your Bank Is Closed
Although your bank may be closed one of the two days, you still have option of using online banking and ATMs. Both these options allow you to gain access to your funds even if your bank is closed. many ATMs are even open 24/7, and many bank branches even have drive-thru ATMs that are open even if the bank is closed.
If you need a money order, however, you still have some options available. The key to this is to find a retailer that stays open long enough for you to complete the transaction. For example, Walmart sells money orders at its Supercenter and Neighborhood Market stores, which will be open during the holiday.
