Most Banks Close On Bank Holidays
Rose Oswald Poels started working at the Wisconsin Bankers Association more than 20 years ago. Back then, Oswald Poels, who is now the president and CEO of the group, says a lot of banks were open on holidays like the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr., Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
In todays world, its very different, Oswald Poels says.
More banks are choosing to close on Federal Reserve System holidays, such as Washingtons birthday or Columbus Day. Oswald Poels says some banks may take advantage of closing on a weekday holiday to either conduct all-staff training or volunteer in the community.
How Can I Cash A Personal Check When Banks Are Closed
If you receive a personal check during the holidays, there are a few roundabout ways access to your money quickly.
You can cash the check out at a store. It may not be ideal since stores can get chaotic during the holiday season, but it’s a good option if you need money in a pinch.
Some ATMs let you cash or deposit checks, but you may already need to have those funds in your account. If your bank’s ATM network doesn’t let you make check transactions, you can deposit the check using your bank’s online or mobile features, then cash your check out using an ATM.
Funds likely won’t be available right away, so this alternative works best if you prefer to have money safe in your account and don’t mind waiting a day or two.

Banks Can Open On A Federal Reserve Bank Holiday
A bank may choose to be open on a Federal Reserve holiday. Transactions will generally process the same way they would on a weekend.
For instance, if you sign the documents to send a domestic wire transfer at your bank on a Saturday morning, that wire wont be processed until Monday morning at the earliest, assuming Monday isnt a Federal Reserve holiday. The same happens if you deposit a check in a bank on a holiday. If your bank is open on one of the Federal Reserve System holidays, the Fed is likely to reopen on the next business day. Automated Clearing House Network transactions also arent processed on a bank holiday or on a weekend.
The Fed is closed on the second Monday in October for Columbus Day. So, if you deposit a check into your bank account on the Saturday before this holiday, the earliest this check will be fully available will typically be on Tuesday if the bank has same-day availability.
Customers at a bank without same-day availability wont have their money available until Wednesday, Oswald Poels says.

Why Arent Banks Open On Sundays
The reason banks are not open on Sunday is that its not a business day. Their workers are still human and need time off to rest and enjoy their hard-earned cash with their families.
Even machines require a rest, right?
Plus, it may not be cost-effective for banks to hire additional staff to work full-time on Sundays. Thus, banks let workers rest and maintain the much-needed work-life balance.
Even banks that are open on weekends operate for limited hours. Its because they run with a small staff of employees that want to make extra money on weekends.
Alternatively, fintech makes it seem like banks never close.
Using your bank mobile app or website, you can check your account balance, send cash to your children or friends, pay bills, or deposit checks with your smartphone.
Think about it! Before ATMs and online mobile banking, everyone had to wait until Monday for financial transactions. It was after banks closed Friday at 4 or 5 pm. But when Monday came, people still had to wait in line for minor account transactions like getting your checking account balance or withdrawing $100 from an ATM.

Observance Of Religious Custom
For followers of the Christian faith, Sunday is intended to be a day of worship and rest.
This custom is recognized throughout most of the northern hemisphere, and a majority of businesses are closed on Sundays.
Banks, after all, are businesses, and they too recognize this custom.
Not all banks, however, close their doors on Sundays and give employees the option to come into work.
The recognition of religious customs, however, is not the primary reason for banks closing on Sunday, as weâll discuss in the next section.
