Your Venmo Balance Isn’t Insured
Unlike your bank account, your Venmo balance isn’t insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. If your bank were to go under, the government insures up to $250,000. But Venmo has no such guarantees.
That means that in the unlikely event that the service goes down, Venmo isn’t responsible for you getting back whatever funds you had sitting in your account.
It’s smarter to minimize your risk by not leaving any significant sums of money in the app.
How Much Does Venmo Charge
Venmo does not charge fees for most actions. However, it doesnt mean its completely free rather, users should understand when they will be charged to send and access their money.
Venmo offers the convenience of sending and receiving money with friends, but it doesnt have the protections of a traditional bank. For everyday purchases, stick with debit or credit cards.
Your Venmo balance or your bank account can be used to send money to other Venmo users. Venmo charges you a 3% fee if you choose to use your credit card to send money. Using your credit card linked to your account, for example, if you send your friend $100, you will be charged $103.
Fees may also apply if you use the instant transfer feature to withdraw money from your Venmo balance to your bank account. With an instant transfer, money typically reaches your bank within 30 minutes, but Venmo charges a 1% fee, starting at $0.25 and going up to $10. The standard withdrawal is free, but it can take up to three business days for the funds to appear in your account.
Additionally, you could also be charged fees if you use a Venmo debit card to withdraw money from an ATM outside Venmos network. Venmo will also charge $2.50 for using an ATM thats not part of the MoneyPass network, and $3 for over-the-counter withdrawals at banks. By using a MoneyPass ATM, you can avoid these fees.
Other Forms Of Venmo Scams
While Woods fell victim to a voice phishing scam, there are other ways hackers can infiltrate your Venmo account.
There is the in-person Venmo scam. It might be a stranger who asks if they can borrow your phone. But instead of calling or texting anyone, theyre clicking into your Venmo account and sending themselves your hard-earned money.
Check out this video detailing an in-person scam:
People have also fallen victim to the fake sale scam. Thats when a hacker poses as a seller of some type. If you try to buy their product, theyll give you a Venmo address to send your money to. Once you send it, they cut off all communication, and youre left with no product and no money. Worse, Venmo will do little to help you because it tells you to never buy items from a stranger in the apps terms of service.
Some cybercriminals have used the reverse transaction scam. This is when they find a seller online who accepts Venmo. They then buy something from that seller. As soon as they receive their items, they reverse the transaction, leaving you holding an empty bag.
Some hackers have even been able to access Venmo accounts through Bluetooth on your phone. Once they gain access, they send themselves money while you move through your day, completely unaware.

Can I Use Venmo To Buy Or Sell Merchandise Goods Or Services
Venmo is designed for payments between friends and people who know and trust one another.
You may use Venmo to pay for goods or services using a Venmo card at merchants that accept the card or through mobile websites or apps that are approved to offer Venmo as a payment option. If available, the option to pay using Venmo will appear as a Venmo-branded payment button at checkout or, in some cases, may appear after you first select PayPal as your payment method. Additionally, you may use Venmo to pay for goods and services when directly given the option to do so by Venmo.

How To Transfer Money From A Bank Account To Venmo
Money transfer involves sending money from one account to another account of the same or of a different financial institution. The money transfer process can either be domestic or international. Bank to bank transfers are called wire transfers and are a bit costly as compared to account transfers of the same financial institution. Today, I will focus on how to transfer money from a bank to Venmo.
When transferring money from one account to the other within the same institution, you require the account number of the recipient. However, when transferring money to an account of a different bank, you require the account of the recipient and the routing number of the receiving bank. The routing number helps your bank to identify the receiving financial institution as each financial institution has a unique routing number.
To do a direct deposit of money from your bank account to a Venmo account, you have to look for the Venmo routing and account numbers in the Venmo app. Tap the icon at the top of the app and select Settings and tap direct deposit to see the numbers. To transfer money using the routing number and account number yourself, you need to log in to your bank account online.
Reviews Of Transfers Out Of Venmo
We review account and transaction activity at various times, including when you initiate a transfer of funds out of Venmo. We may use proprietary fraud and risk modeling when completing this review and assessing the risk associated with your Venmo account. This review checks for, among other things, suspicious or illegal activity, and whether your account activity and the activity of users with whom youve transacted comply with the Venmo User Agreement.
Review may result in:
delayed, blocked or canceled transfers
funds being held by Venmo
funds being applied to a negative Venmo account balance or used to offset loss incurred by Venmo
account suspension or termination
funds being seized to comply with a court order, warrant or other legal process and/or
funds you previously received being reversed .
Among other reasons, we may take the above actions if you knowingly or unknowingly received a payment that was made from a stolen card, compromised bank account, or compromised Venmo account, or if you conducted a prohibited transaction, such as using Venmo to transact with another user who is not an authorized merchant and who you do not personally know for good or services .
In connection with our review process, you may be required to provide us with additional information and/or documentation to verify your identity. We may limit your account and your access to funds in it until verification is completed.

What Is The Safest Way To Use Venmo
None of the above is meant to scare you away from using Venmo. Its a solid application and a convenient way to send money without having to carry cash.
But like anything you do online, you have to be aware of any scams, know the risks, and be aware of how you can protect yourself.
Now that you understand some of the Venom scams that exist, what can you do to protect yourself and ensure you are using Venmo safety? Below are some tips.
Venmo Under Pressure To Clean Up Its Act
Venmo has been criticized for its security, slow customer service responses to breaches, and failure to protect users’ privacy. These complaints have emphasized the app’s shortcomings but on the positive side, also resulted in the company being forced to take measures to prevent future slip-ups and better serve its customers.
One notable settlement was reached in 2016, regarding a complaint from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton about Venmos negligent privacy, safety, and security practices. The settlement included a $175,000 payment to the state as well as reforms to these practices.
Moreover, in March 2018, Venmo reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission concerning the companys failure to disclose information to consumers about privacy settings. The FTC also found the company in violation of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Acts Safeguards Rule, which requires financial institutions to implement safeguards to protect the security, confidentiality, and integrity of customer information.
As part of the settlement, Venmo is subject to biennial, third-party audits of its compliance efforts for 10 years. Violations of these terms could result in a civil penalty of up to $41,484 for each one.
