We recommend you enroll with Zelle before anyone sends you money this will help you get your first payment faster. Almost anyone with a bank account in the U.S. can receive money by using the Zelle app.
How To Receive Money With Zelle
While sending money is a multistep process, receiving money with Zelle from an enrolled recipient is just the opposite. Youll give the email address or mobile phone number associated with your account to the person sending you money. If you already use Zelle, thats all you need to do.
When you receive money, itll be automatically deposited in your bank account within a few minutes. If you dont have Zelle yet, youll get a notification that you have money waiting and instructions for how to enroll.
How To Protect Yourself When Using Zelle
To help avoid mishaps, a good rule of thumb is to verify that a recipients phone number or email address isnt just theirs, but is also the same one they use on their Zelle account. Since Zelle identifies users by phone numbers or email addresses, these forms of contact info act as unique identifiers. For further confirmation, Ackroyd recommends sending a small amount 50 cents or $1 first to make sure that the right person is receiving it.
When it comes to fraud, your rights are a bit more clear. The Electronic Funds Transfer Act governs Zelle transactions. If your bank account is hacked or someone youve never authorized uses Zelle to take money from your account, your bank should reimburse you as long as you report the loss promptly.
Depending on the bank, however, you could be out the money for up to 10 days while the bank investigates and if the bank decides you authorized the payment, your loss could be permanent. Also, the law doesnt necessarily protect you if your purchase is defective, a scam or not what was promised.
When it comes to sending payments to people you dont know, Zelle doesnt recommend doing this, stating on its FAQ page, Zelle is a great way to send money to friends, family or others you trust such as your personal trainer, babysitter, or a neighbor. If you dont know the person, or arent sure you will get what you paid for , we recommend you do not use Zelle for these types of transactions, which are potentially high risk.

Can A Zelle Payment Be Reversed Or Can I Charge Back On Zelle
Depends on the situation really.
If fraud is involved and can be proven, a Zelle payment could potentially be reversed.
That being said, Zelle does not offer any buyer or seller protection and is intended to be used for sending money to people that you trust like friends and family so getting them to reverse payment may prove difficult.
In some cases, you may be able to cancel a payment you made with Zelle in essence reversing the payment.
This most frequently occurs when you Zelle someone and that person doesnt currently have a Zelle account.
That person has 14 days to set up a free Zelle account to claim the funds that you sent them.
During this 14 day window, you are able to cancel the payment if you choose to do so.

Unsuspecting Consumers Are Giving Criminals Access To Their Bank Accounts
Scammers are using Zelle, the peer-to-peer payment system offered to consumers through their financial institution. Zelle works like Venmo and other payment systems, allowing users to send money from their bank accounts to friends and family.
Unfortunately, security experts say criminals are using Zelle to drain victims bank accounts. Like many scams, this one is based on the claim that the scammer is trying to protect the victim from fraud.
The target receives a text that appears to be from their bank asking if they attempted a Zelle transaction. Regardless of how they answer, the target next receives a phone call from the scammer, who spoofs the number so it shows up as coming from the targets bank.
The victim will then receive a set of instructions that ultimately winds up compromising their bank account information. The scammers use the information to withdraw funds and make off with their ill-gotten gains.
What If I Accidentally Send Money To The Wrong Person
Sending funds with Zelle is similar to using cash. You dont have protections if you send money to the wrong person, and you may not be able to get your money back. Before sending any money, make sure your recipient’s contact information is correct and that the recipient is someone you know and trust.
If you sent money to the wrong person, we recommend contacting the recipient and requesting the money be returned. For information on how you may be able to cancel a payment, please see Section 8, Can I cancel a payment?

Best Zelle International Payment Alternatives
If you’re a Zelle user who’d like to send money abroad, you are in luck in that you’ll have plenty of low-cost, seamless transfer services to choose from instead. First up, you may wonder whether using your bank is a good option instead of Zelle. At Monito, we generally recommend against using banks for international wire transfers due to the exorbitant fees, poor exchange rates, and long waiting times.
Instead, we recommend money transfer specialist services, which are considerably faster and just as secure as the banks, all with the added benefit of coming in at a fraction of the cost. Which specialist service is best for you will depend on where you’d like to send money abroad, how much you’d like to send, and how your recipient would like to receive their funds. What’s more, many money transfer specialists offer international transfers on both desktop sites and mobile apps making them just as savvy and user-friendly as what you’ve probably come to expect from Zelle.
According to data from millions of searches on Monito’s real-time comparison engine between April 2020 and 2021, the three cheapest specialist services for transfers from the US to bank accounts in countries abroad were the following:
