In most situations, food hampers are built at the Food Bank warehouse and delivered to your community depot. There are depots in neighbourhoods throughout Edmonton located mostly in churches and community centres. Volunteers at the depot will greet you, ask for your identification and identification for each person in your household.

Please remember to bring a cart, buggy, wagon, suitcase with wheels, or other means to transport your food. Food hampers are based on your family size which means there may be multiple boxes to take home .

Yes, Edmonton Gleaners Association, more commonly known as Edmontonâs Food Bank, is a registered charity with Revenue Canada â charitable number 129 185 310 RR0001.

Edmonton Gleaners Association will generally provide an automatic tax receipt on the condition that the donorâs full name and mailing address are provided for monetary donations of $10 or more. On occasion, during specific campaigns, and clearly indicated on correspondence, Edmonton Gleaners Association reserves the right to ask for a minimum monetary donation of $20 or more to receive an automatic tax receipt on the condition that a full name and mailing address are provided .

DONATED FOOD DISTRIBUTING ORGANIZATIONS are not allowed to accept or serve most types of homeprepared foods. However, homemade baked goods that do not need refrigeration to remain safe may be received from DONORS.

Commercially Packaged Foods Not Needing Refrigeration

The donation of commercially canned, boxed, and otherwise packaged foods is encouraged.

Fresh Produce Donations

Food donations may include fresh produce, including home-grown fruits and vegetables. Fresh produce should be protected from contamination and receive final preparation, such as washing and cutting, in a DONOR KITCHEN or licensed kitchen.

Food Prepared in a DONOR KITCHEN

Except for baked goods , DONATED FOOD DISTRIBUTING ORGANIZATIONS may not accept foods prepared in a home kitchen. Instead, foods for donation should be prepared in either a DONOR KITCHEN or a commercial food establishment, such as a restaurant.

A DONOR KITCHEN is a publicly available kitchen in a faith-based organization, community center, or other site. The DONOR KITCHEN does not need to have a health permit, but must have basic facilities such as adequate handwashing, dishwashing, refrigeration, and cooking equipment. It must have a safe water supply, be protected from weather and animals, and be cleaned before food preparation starts.

Safe Food Handling Practices

Training

Although training is not a requirement for preparing food donations, food safety classes explain the food safety precautions required with feeding large groups. Many local health agencies, WSU Cooperative Extension offices, and food industry associations give short classes on food safety.

Personnel

A knowledgeable group leader with food safety training and a Washington State Food Worker Card, if possible, should be selected to organize the food preparation efforts. Children under 10 years old should only handle wrapped foods, raw produce, and raw dry food staples to limit the potential for food safety errors. Food workers who are ill should not handle or prepare food.

Handwashing

Proper handwashing facilities and supplies must be convenient for all food handlers.

All food handlers should wash their hands before beginning work, and after:

  • Coughing or sneezing into their hands.

We are going to share general guidelines as to how long different types of foods are safe to eat – keyword here being general. What’s most important to know about food safety are the signs of spoilage.

According to the USDA, “If the date passes during home storage, a product should still be safe and wholesome if handled properly until the time spoilage is evident.” Common signs of spoilage include an off odor, flavor, or texture due to naturally occurring spoilage bacteria. Of course, mold is also an indicator.

Expiry And Distribution A Quick Explainer

Foodbank Victoria receives a wide variety of food and grocery products from our generous donors. Many of our products come to us because they are nearing the end of their shelf life, and we work hard to ensure that those products are distributed to our agency partners as quickly as possible.

Under Australian Food Safety Standards, there are two main types of expiry Best Before and Use By. The vast majority of food products you will see at Foodbank Victoria and on your supermarket shelves will feature one of these formats.

Use By Date

A mark of product safety. You should not distribute or consume foods after their Use By Date, and it is illegal to sell a product after its Use By has elapsed without an official shelf life extension from the product manufacturer. In some cases shelf life can be extended by freezing a product before its UBD.

Best Before Date

The most common format. Most packaged foods feature a BBD, which is an indicator of a products quality up to a certain date. These products can be legally sold and safely consumed after their Best Before Date, although the quality will often begin to decline.

Canned foods stored in a cool, dry location, that are not bulging or leaking, can be safely eaten for several years past their best-if-used-by date printed on the can.

What Makes Canned Food Unsafe To Consume

There is only one thing that will impact the safety of the food consumers eat contamination. The inside of a sealed can is a sterile environment. No air equals no microbes equals no harm to the food. The natural process of decay will sap the vitamins and savoriness of the contents but the food will carry no harmful diseases.

Not all food reacts the same way to its canned incarceration, however. High-acid foods tomatoes, citrus and other fruits do not support food poisoning bacteria in any conditions and the offending germs will shortly die in such an environment. Low-acid foods mushrooms, meats, green beans typically receive a zap of sterilizing heat before canning. So, if faced with a can of food of unknown origins and age the higher the acid the safer the contents.

A compromised can will be cause for concern. Any dents or damage in a cans exterior may be an indication of seal issues. Any air that may seep into the interior can lead to disease-causing infection by bacteria. If a can is bulging or leaking it should be disposed of without consideration.

Fortunately there is no reason to worry about a cans history before consuming its contents. That is because nature has provided each and every one of us with the best arbiter of a foods safety available our reliable senses. If food from a newly opened can looks rancid or smalls bad do not eat it, regardless of any date stamped on its lid.

Why Do Grocery Stores Order More Food Than They Can Sell

Grocery stores do not over-order with the intent of throwing away products. With profit margins as low as 2%, they cant afford to do that. Instead, they try and balance having their shelves full and abundant while meeting and not exceeding set shrink targets that are often about 3% of the total.

But the reason here might surprise you unless you work retail.

In short, displays of food items sell much better when they look full. Now sometimes good merchandisers use dummy risers and other things to give the appearance of fullness without over-committing to too much product.

But ultimately, if stores only had on display what they would actually sell, their sales would go down as many stores would look like a coastal store after a hurricane warning was announced. In other words, the shelves and displays might look kind of barren and empty.

Psychologically we, as consumers, tend to respond poorly to that.

Think back to when you were at a store and saw that they were almost sold out of an item and you mostly saw a big empty shelf. Did you buy that last one? If youre like most people, unless you were desperate for that 1 thing specifically, you probably didnt.

So grocery stores, within reason, order to make the store look full and abundant.

What Date Labels Actually Mean

With the exception of baby formula, there are no federal regulations on date labeling. Often the best if used by, sell by, and use by designations are just a manufacturer’s best guess about how long their food will taste its freshest. Supermarkets may also use the dates as a guide when stocking shelves. But the dates have little to do with how safe the food is.

  • Best If Used By/Before: This guarantees when a product is of the best quality or flavor. For instance, a jar of salsa may not taste as fresh or crackers may be soft instead of crisp after this date. Its not about safety.
  • Sell By: This is the date set by manufacturers to tell retailers when to remove a product from shelves. The goal is to ensure that consumers have products at their best quality, which can be several days to several weeks, depending on the item. For instance, milk, assuming proper refrigeration, should last five to seven days past its sell-by date before turning sour.
  • Use By: This is the last date that guarantees the best quality of a product. This is also not a safety date except when used on infant formula.

In an attempt to standardize labeling and make it clearer, the Food Date Labeling Act was introduced in both houses of Congress in May 2016. But the bill is still in committee in both houses.
