The Downside Of Banks That Dont Use Chexsystems

How to Send and Receive Money with Zelle® in the Bank of America App

The downside of looking for a Non-ChexSystems bank is that there just are not that many of them around; only 20% of banks do not use Chex. In our list of 25 Banks That Dont Use ChexSystems, there are six online banks, zero national banks, zero regional banks, and four Local banks. While this is in no way an exhaustive list, especially the local bank section, we can get a sense that to find a Non-ChexSystems you will need to go online or look local.

Online banks offer customer-friendly terms and a nice web/mobile app on the latest technology. However, you will never be able to walk into a local branch to deposit cash, and it can be difficult to order a special product like a secure/cashier check. In general, reaching a human on the phone can be a frustrating endeavor.

Local banks provide the warm customer service that online banks cannot. If there is ever a problem, you have someplace to walk into to discuss. Unfortunately, local banks seldom have the deep pockets of a rich mega-bank and may be lagging in their technology offerings, with clunky websites and apps, frequent downtime, and a lack of integrated services like Billpay and Zelle.;

At the end of the day, choosing a bank comes down to personal preferences. Do some research, read some reviews, and decide what type of bank is right for you. Folks with bad Chex history will simply have fewer options to choose from and may have to sacrifice some preferences in order to obtain a new checking account.

    Bank’s fraud department shows up on phone

    Damon Lander runs a university biology lab at Miami University’s Middletown campus. As a university employee, he’s not the type of person who would fall for a phone scam. Until this one.

    “The other evening, I got a phone call from what I thought was Fifth Third Bank,” he said.

    With his caller ID showing his bank’s number, Lander answered the phone, and immediately worried when the caller explained he was with the bank’s fraud department.

    “He told me they had detected fraud in my account, and they were going to help me take care of that, and set up security measures, and take care of the fraudulent charge,” Lander said.

    It all sounded perfectly legitimate. So he did what the phone rep instructed, such as entering a verification code on the log-in page on the bank’s app.

    The caller promised to lock the account, and issue him a new debit card. Lander thought everything was taken care of.

    But within a few minutes, Lander says, he got a strange text from the bank.”My user ID had been removed,” he said.

    How Does Chexsystems Work

    There are certain behaviors that upset banks. When a bank gets upset at a customer, they can tell Chex to make an update to the customers negative account history.;

    Each bank creates its own rules for what makes its bank upset. It is challenging to give detailed specifics about a banks rules because they are seldom made public. Generally, the following types of activities get reported to Chex:

    • Unpaid negative balances: Your account slips into the negative, and Overdraft fees probably make you even more negative. If your account stays continuously negative for 30-60 days, your account will likely be closed by the bank. Nearly 98% of bank closures reported to Chex are due to unresolved negative balances.
    • Excessive bounced checks/overdrafts: You have exceeded what the bank believes to be a reasonable number of bounced checks or overdrafts.
    • Accounts closed for cause: You have done something suspicious and the bank thinks you have committed fraud.
    • Debit card/ATM abuse: You have done something suspicious at the ATM, such as depositing empty envelopes.;
    • Excessive account applications: You applied for multiple new checking accounts across different banks in a short period of time, which may be a sign of fraud.
    • Excessive loss of checks/debit cards: You suspiciously keep reporting checkbooks or debit cards as lost/stolen
    • Suspected fraud or identity theft: You are using the account for criminal activity.

    Why Doesn’t Zelle Work Internationally

    Mobile wallets;and online payment services have revolutionized how we pay online and send money to our friends and family. Similar services such as;Paypal,;Venmo;and;Square Cash;have made peer-to-peer payments extremely easy. Unfortunately, they either don’t work internationally or offer costly solutions, as with PayPal.

    Before choosing an alternative, it’s worth understanding what Zelle is and how it differs from the other alternatives we’ll discuss in this article. In short, Zelle is a US-based payment service that allows you to send funds electronically from a US-based bank account to another person’s bank account, which must also be based in the US.

    Money can either be sent via Zelle’s dedicated mobile app or online banking or mobile apps of banks and credit unions that participate in the Zelle Network.

    Is Your Information Secure With Zelle

    Digital payment apps are still a relative novelty. And many people might not be sure about how secure they are. The company uses authentication and monitoring features to make payments more secure. That applies to both using Zelle through your bank or credit unions mobile app, or just by using the Zelle app. However, Zelle does encourage the users to send the money only to people and businesses they trust.

    There has been some controversy about Zelle, though. The main issue is that you cant cancel the payment once you send the money. The money transfer is almost instantaneous. And if youve typed in the wrong email or phone number, you wont be able to get it back. The only thing you can do is to try to solve the issue yourself.

    Bank Of America Zelle Scam Steals Thousands Through Mobile App Payment

    Does Bank Of America Use Zelle

    Its really painful, said Noscene Brooks. She is paying $ 3,500. You just save the hard earned money and rob you of it. You just dont know what to do and youre lost.

    Brooks received the text that it was her bank, Bank of America, that confirmed the purchase. When she answered no, she asked someone to say they were representatives of Bank of America and make it sound real. Brooks was then said to have withdrawn $ 3,500 from his pending Bank of America account. All she had to do was send money to herself through Zelle and reverse it.

    When she sent $ 3,500 through Zelle, the money disappeared. What she doesnt understand is why she didnt reach her when she sent money to her email or phone number via Zelle.

    Thats where Ive lost my word, but now Im running out of thousands of dollars for that, she said.

    The Zelle transaction contains her information, but below it you see another strange name that makes it look like someone has hijacked her Zelle account.

    I sent it to myself, so it should have reached me, but obviously it didnt, Brooks wondered.

    The same scam happened to Darlene Chelsea. She lost $ 3,500 to a scammer after sending herself money through Zelle in the Bank of America app.

    I sent it to myself and it should reach me, but obviously it didnt reach me, she said.

    According to Chelsea, the phone numbers are made like real Bank of America phone numbers, and fraudsters use the same music on hold as Bank of America. But it wasnt a bank.

    How To Split Money Using Zelle On Bank Of America App

    Another cool feature available in Zelle is the ability to split common expenses with your friends like rent, gifting common friends, meals etc. Zelle does the math for you and calculates the amount you want to request using the total amount and number of people involved including your share as well.

    Lets see the steps on how to do this:

    Zelle Best Practices

    • Use Zelle only for sending and receiving money from your friends, family and people you trust as the transfer is almost instant and non-reversible
    • Double check and confirm the recipients US Mobile number or email linked with Zelle, before making the first transfer. Also, if you are sending money after a long time, follow the same practice of checking with the recipient, that he or she still uses the same mobile number and is active with Zelle.
    • When sending money for first time, you can have your friend request the money using Zelle rather than entering the transfer details
    • Alternatively, do a test transfer of very small amount say $1 to have your friend confirm the receipt, before sending complete amount
    • Make sure both you and your friend are enrolled in in Zelle before doing the transfer to avoid delays and any inconvenience
    • If you receive any money from an unknown source, it could be an error or wrong transfer. In such circumstances, its best not to spend the money and wait for a sufficient time to have the error corrected by the bank. Unless you know and trust the source who sent it to you, dont use such funds.
