Are You Eligible For Food Stamps A Quick Guide
SNAP is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program . If you qualify for SNAP, you can get food stamps.
To qualify, your household must meet certain requirements. But what exactly qualifies as a household?
A household includes all those who live with you, and purchase and prepare food with you. For purposes of SNAP eligibility, all members of a household are considered, not just the head of the household. You will therefore need to provide information about all members of your household.
To be eligible for food stamps, a householdâs resources and earnings must meet three main requirements:
- Income requirements
Letâs go into each of these right now.
Can I Have A Car And Still Get Food Stamps
The short answer is yes â but it depends on your state and the value of your car.
When you apply for SNAP benefits, your caseworker will determine your eligibility based on your income, household size, and resources. If the value of the resources you own is too high, it could disqualify you from getting food stamps.
But not all the resources you own count when determining food stamp eligibility. âCountableâ resources include cash and any resources easily converted into cash â like cars owned by members of the household.
According to USDAâs vehicle policy, up to ~$4,650 of a vehicleâs value is excluded from resources. For example, if your vehicleâs worth is $5,000, only $350 of that total is considered to be a resource.
In some cases, the vehicle’s entire worth is exempt. For example:
- if you reside in the vehicle
- if the vehicle is used to make money
- if you use it to transfer a disabled family member
- if its equity value is $1,500 or less.
Note: States are allowed to disregard USDA regulations and set their own rules about when vehicles count as a resource. Many states exclude cars as an asset, regardless of their worth or practical use. Some of these states follow the less strict vehicle policy of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families in place of the SNAP vehicle guidelines.
Other states also bend the vehicle policy and set their own rules.

This could be a fake advertising gig, a sponsorship, or someone saying that you can turn your hundreds of dollars into thousands of dollars. These scammers will usually hack into your friends accounts and pretend to be them, knowing that you trust your friends.
They will then talk as your trusting friend trying to sell you this opportunity, and they know you will most likely go through with it since you think its your friend.
Then once you give them money or a gift card, they will then ask for your log-in information to get on to your account to promote this advertising opportunity to your other friends. They will then lock your account, take your money, and never talk to you again.

In New York State, the SNAP Program now allows you to have more money in a checking or savings account, or even a retirement account, without affecting your eligibility for SNAP benefits. As of January 1, 2008, most households applying for SNAP benefits no longer have to pass a savings/resource test in order to get SNAP benefits. This means having money in a savings, checking or retirement account, or having other resources, will not keep you from being eligible for SNAP benefits, as long as you meet the income guidelines.
How Long Does It Take For Food Stamps To Get On The Card After Being Approved
Your food stamps are deposited onto your EBT card on the same day each month depending on the last digit of your social security number. After your food stamps are approved, they will be put onto the EBT card in 30 days or less.
For example, if you receive food stamps on the 12th of every month, and they were approved on the 10th, you will receive them on your EBT card in two days. However, if the food stamps were approved on the 13th of the month, you will have to wait until the 12th of the next month to receive the food stamps. This time period is referred to as your âSNAP monthâ.

How To Check Your Food Stamp Balance
SNAP enrollees will need to check the food stamp balance associated with their accounts once they begin spending their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. Once beneficiaries make a purchase using their EBT card, their total amounts of disposable funds for the month decrease. As a result, SNAP recipients need to be sure that they monitor and check their EBT card balance to ensure they always have funds to cover the total prices of their grocery purchases.
