Banking With Chime: Heres How We Rate It

Chime Bank Review (2019): Is Chime Bank Worth it?

Chime is a stripped-down online bank account for deposit, spending and saving.

It doesnt offer the robust suite of features youll see from many of its competitors, but its fully functioning checking and savings accounts, nationwide ATM network, and features that let you deposit cash and checks make it a solid option to use as your primary bank account.

Chime is a solid choice for someone who needs an online account for checking and savings and wants to do other types of money management and investments elsewhere.

These types of services will likely be better found at a bank or credit union or perhaps stock investment companies either in person or online.

Chime Review: Overview And Key Benefits

The banking industry has never had a sterling reputation when it comes to the way it treats customers.

And after a recent series of scandals that included things like opening accounts for customers without their knowledge, improper foreclosures, and the not-so-small matter of its role in the 2008 financial collapse,;that reputation has only gotten worse.

As a result, and understandably, many people have grown to deeply distrust the banking system. But the truth is that its difficult to navigate the modern world without a standard checking account, and trying to do so can be extremely expensive.

A 2016 New York Times story titled The Unbanked notes that customers without bank accounts typically pay anywhere from 3% to 15% for financial transactions that would be free for account holders.

Enter companies like Chime, which aim to offer lower-cost, easier-access banking solutions by leveraging technology.

One of the most notable aspects of Chime is that unlike the big banks that charge tons of fees , it charges almost;no fees at all.

Thats made possible in part by the fact that Chime is an online-only bank. That means there are no brick-and-mortar locations, which results in lower overhead and big savings that can be passed on to customers.

How Do I Fund My Chime Bank Account

One of the biggest concerns faced by those that are yet to take the challenger banking plunge is that of depositing cash. The reason for this is that banks like Chime do not have any physical branches.

With that said, there are a number of different ways that you can deposit funds into your account.

    • Direct Deposit: If youre looking to get your wages paid into your account, Chime will email you a form when you first register. You simply need to hand over the direct deposit form to your employer.
    • ACH: The easiest way to transfer funds into your Chime account is via ACH. Just enter your Chime bank account details when making the transfer.
    • Transfer Initiated by Chime: You also have the option of connecting an external bank account with Chime. Not all banks are supported, so youll need to check with Chime first. Although this option is free, you will need to wait up to five working days for the transfer to be credited.
    • Cash Deposit: For those of you that wish to deposit cold-hard cash, Chime has you covered. The provider does this through GreenDot. The company has more than 60,000 retail locations throughout the US. You simply need to hand over the cash to the retail agent, alongside your Chime account details, and they will take care of the rest. Take note, you will be limited to a maximum deposit of $1,000 per 24 hours, or $10,000 per month. This is to ensure that Chime Bank remains fully compliant with anti-money laundering laws.

Customer Service We Don’t Have That Department

If you had asked me a year ago, I would have said this debit card was the best I’ve ever had. Slowly things started to deteriorate. Their customer service, or lack of is ridiculous. They don’t actually help in any way as all they do is read from a script. If you ask any questions that would cause them to have to deviate from said script, they will ask you to submit a request via e-mail. My main issue was with a certain dispute for a product which I don’t even have in my possession yet was charged for. After disputing, then requesting a second look at my dispute, and even escalating it to the BBB, they still claim that “no error occurred”. The reasoning had absolutely nothing to do with the initial dispute. In short, I bought a laptop which was not up to standards and as I returned the laptop to the merchant within their return window, and they refused to allow the return, I simply left it with a manager at the store. Reason being, if I don’t have the laptop, they can’t charge me. Their explanation of the adverse action, “The product was not damaged at time of purchase”, which I never claimed. It just didn’t operate as advertised. The months long dispute over $500+ and lack of anyone to verbally speak to about the dispute caused me to close my account.
