Can Someone Access My Bank Account With My Social Security Number
Someone could try to access your bank account using your Social Security number, but it alone wouldnt be enough. Theyd need a lot more personal information than that to get to your finances.
Dont believe me? Try calling your bank and say youve forgotten your password. Youll be surprised at the range of questions theyll ask you, from What is the second letter of your mothers maiden name? to When and how big was your last deposited check? and Is the number youre calling from your personal one?
Many times, youll be required to physically show up if you want to reset your bank account password. Why?
Anyone can call a bank having stolen someone elses Social Security number, but its not enough to prove your identity. Usually, a bank would not even ask for your SSN if you called them because it is not a good way to verify who you are.
Without additional information, no one could access your bank account with your Social Security number alone. In terms of bank security, you should worry about other things like a poor password, lack of two-factor authentication, and general carelessness when online banking.

Get A Social Security Statement
The Social Security Administration maintains an online service that lets you find out what you have paid into Social Security, how many hours of work your employers have reported each quarter, and what your expected benefits would be if you were to retire or go on disability in the near future.

So you want to clear up any double-dipping of your Social Security account.
Requesting your statement is straightforward. You will need to create a my Social Security account if you dont already have one. You can access the sign-in/account creation page here. Once logged in, you can request a Social Security statement to print out from your account. If you prefer a low-tech approach, you can fill out a request form and mail it in, and get a statement mailed to you in 4 to 6 weeks.

They Can Use Your Ssn To Open A Phone Account In Your Name
Its easy for criminals to open a phone account in your name if they have your name, address and SSN, Focht said. One of his clients learned that her SSN had been stolen when she received a Verizon Wireless bill. It turned out that someone had opened an account in her name, then purchased several expensive phones, charging them to the account.
What was particularly irksome in her case was that the accounts were opened using an address the client hadnt lived at for more than a decade, Focht said.
Pro tip: Focht said that phone companies usually have fraud departments to deal with stolen services. Immediately let the department know what is going on, and then follow up with a letter. You might need to send a copy of that letter to the credit agencies if the issue shows up on your credit report.

The Social Security Number Scam
Here’s an internet scam that’s been debunked for a few years but is still promoted through emails, blogs and online videos. It tells just the kind of tale an overspent consumer would love to believe, of a secret government bank account in her name that she can access electronically using her Social Security number plus a Federal Reserve Bank routing number found on the back of the card.
The problems with this story are obvious individuals do not have bank accounts or banking relationships with the Federal Reserve, for one only banks do. And the government does not have private bank accounts linked to each SSN.
Still, there have been numbers on Social Security cards since they were first issued in 1936. Do they mean anything?
