I don’t know if you remember the summer of 2008. The average gas prices in the United States shot over $4 per gallon. I remember a lot of service industry companies adding a surcharge to help cover the added costs.
Would Doordash do something like that if things go out of control?
Don’t plan on it.
I expect one of two scenarios:
Doordash won’t do anything. Part of that is their hands are tied by the IRS definitions we looked at above. If they provide a reimbursement, they risk being having us classified as employees.
If Doordash does provide extra pay in one place they’ll take it away somewhere else. We talked about Prop 22 above when that went into effect, Doordash and other gig companies started putting a surcharge on delivery fees to cover those costs. However, they also reduced the suggested customer tips. That way the final total didn’t look like the cost of ordering had increased.
I don’t have a problem with Doordash adding a surcharge to cover better delivery fees in light of the increased costs. It’s certainly a good excuse for them to add a little to the cost.
However, Doordash’s M.O. is to take that money away from us somewhere else.
So, with all that said, I don’t expect Doordash to improve a thing.
How To Get A Refund On Doordash
Theres nothing more frustrating than placing an order from your favorite restaurant, waiting for delivery, and realizing that something is wrong with your order.
Fortunately, when you use food delivery services like DoorDash, you can request a refund through the app without the hassle of contacting the restaurant.
After delivery, you can request a refund from DoorDash if you are dissatisfied with your order. Customers can also cancel in-progress orders and request full refundsthat have not yet been confirmed by restaurants or assigned a Dasher. In some situations, DoorDash may decline to issue a refund.

Remember how I said Doordash lied earlier? They confirmed it with this notification.
We believe every order should be worth your time, but up to this point, you were paid similarly for both long distance orders and shorter trips. To make these longer delvieries more worthwhile, we’re making an adjustment so you get paid more for longer trips.

It was an admission of a lie.
Lie or not, does this change mean that Doordash has seen the error of their ways? Here’s two things to pay attention to:
Do Dashers Pay For Missing Items
No, Dashers do not pay for missing items. After your Dasher leaves the restaurant, they are no longer responsible for any items missing from your order. If your Dasher delivers an order and you find that items are missing, you can request a refund through the DoorDash app.
With many customers concerned about potential food tampering, most restaurants staple or seal their bags before pickup.
As a result, Dashers cannot check the contents of the bag before leaving the restaurant, and missing items are almost always the restaurants fault.
Follow these steps to report a missing item on the DoorDash app.
- Choose Orders, select the order with a missing item, and tap Help in the upper right corner.
- Under Order Issues, choose the Missing Items option and select the items that were missing.
- Add any relevant details and submit your report.
After you submit your missing item report, youll likely hear back from a DoorDash customer service agent within a few hours.

That may not be as obvious to new drivers, so if you are a new Dasher, I apologize. Doordash doesn’t pay any extra money for gas. You get paid on a per delivery basis, with a payment that includes Doordash base pay, any incentives like peak pay and the customer’s tip.
It’s up to you to take care of your gas costs out of that money.
