As the IRS explains, “To help protect against potential fraud, the tool also does not allow people to change bank account information already on file with the IRS.” You also can’t change your form of payment if the IRS has already scheduled it for delivery.

If you haven’t filed your 2019 taxes , you might want to do that now. Many people can file federal tax returns for free, and tax-prep services like TurboTax and H& R Block are easy to use. The deadline for filing taxes in 2020 was moved from April 15 to July 15.

The Get My Payment app was designed for people who file federal taxes. The IRS has a separate spot online where non-tax filers, including many low-income earners, can enter their information to get stimulus checks for themselves and qualifying dependents.

Who gets stimulus checks first? The Treasury Department says that the first recipients of stimulus checks officially called “economic impact payments,” part of the $2 trillion CARES Act to provide economic relief amid the coronavirus pandemic were taxpayers who have already filed their 2019 tax returns and have provided direct deposit information to the IRS. Many of these payments began showing up in taxpayers’ bank accounts on Wednesday, April 15, or even earlier.

What If I Don’t Get A Payment

If your bank account information was incorrect and you didn’t get a direct deposit of the second payment, you can claim it later when you file your taxes, according to the IRS.

The way this works is that you claim the payments as a Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 tax return in 2021. The credit will either reduce your tax bill or increase the size of any refund. While you gather your documents for filing, keep and include any letters or forms you receive from the IRS.

To be sure, there are other reasons that people may not get the second round of stimulus money or get less than they’re eligible to receive according to the new law.

People who have a change in eligibility, such as a new baby, don’t get the amount they should have or think they were set to receive a payment and didn’t for any reason can claim the stimulus via the credit, the IRS says.

The monthly payments from the expanded child tax credit will begin on July 15, the IRS said.

The Internal Revenue Service has launched a new tool that allows families to update their bank account information ahead of the first child tax credit payment set for July 15.

Families will receive their July 15 payments by direct deposit on the bank account currently on file with the IRS. Those who are not enrolled for direct deposit will receive a check. Then, people can use the Child Tax Credit Update Portal to update their direct deposit information.

Any updates made by Aug. 2 will apply to the Aug. 13 payment and all subsequent monthly payments for the rest of 2021, the IRS said.

The expanded child tax credit provides up to $3,600 for each child under age 6 and $3,000 for children ages 6-17. The credit will be paid in the form of monthly payments of $300 or $250, based on the childs age, that will be paid monthly through December. The remainder can be claimed when filing 2021 taxes.

Couples with an adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less heads of household filers who make $112,500 or less or single parents who earn $75,000 or less will qualify for the full amounts. Above those income levels, the extra amount above the existing $2,000 credit either $1,000 or $1,600 per child is reduced by $50 for every extra $1,000 modified AGI.

  • Individual tax filers with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 and head-of-household filers with adjusted gross income up to $112,500 will receive the full payment of $1,400, plus $1,400 for each eligible dependent.
  • For filers with incomes above the $75,000/$112,500/$150,000 thresholds, payments are reduced at a much sharper rate than with the first and second stimulus payments. Payments decrease to zero for single filers at $80,000, for heads of household at $120,000 and for married couples at $160,000.
  • Social Security recipients and railroad retirees who are otherwise not required to file a tax return are also eligible and will not be required to file a return.
