If The File Downloads But Then Doesn’t Open In Quicken

You may need to find the QFX file on your computer and open it for it to load the transactions in Quicken. The default download location for QFX files is the Downloads folder.

  • In Windows 10, the Downloads folder can be accessed by right-clicking the Start menu and selecting the File Explorer. In the File Explorer, select the folder in the left panel. The file will have the .qfx extension. Select the one that matches the date and time you completed the download from the bank’s website.
  • You can also import the QFX file from inside the program. In Quicken, go to File > File Import > Web Connect File…. Select the folder in the left panel. The file will have the .qfx extension. Select the one that matches the date and time you completed the download from the bank’s website.

Register A Quicken Data File With A Quicken Id

When you set up an account for online banking, Quicken requires you to link your Quicken data file to a Quicken ID. If you dont currently have a Quicken ID, you will need to create one.

Fill in the information to set up your Quicken ID and link your data file.

How To Activate A Web Connect Account

To activate a Web Connect account:

  • On your financial institution’s website, click the option to download your account information as a Web Connect file. If prompted, click Open.
  • If this is the first time you have downloaded information for this account, or if Quicken cannot determine which account to download the transactions into, you are prompted to identify the Quicken account you use to track this financial information.
  • If you have set up an existing Quicken account for this account, click Account already exists, then choose the account nickname from the drop-down menu.
  • If you have not yet set up a Quicken account for this account, click Create a new Quicken account, and then click Continue.
  • Click Continue. Your recent account history is downloaded from your financial institution to Quicken. Depending on the amount of information being sent, you may see a progress bar indicating how much of the transfer is complete.
  • When your recent account history has been transferred, accept the downloaded transactions into Quicken.
  • After the initial download and processing, you can download the Web Connect file from the Online Center window by clicking Update/Send.
  • Note: With Web Connect, you cannot send email, make online transfers, or make payments through Quicken. However, these functions are available through Direct Connect. Please contact your financial institution to see if they support this download format.

      What You Need To Get Started

      First, you will need a Customer ID and Password. With Web Connect, your Customer ID and Password are the same as the ones you use to login to The Peoples Bank Website.

      How Do I Get Started Using Direct Connect For Quicken Or Quickbooks

      Choose the appropriate Getting Started Guide for your version of Quicken or QuickBooks and your operating system:

      If you encounter problems connecting Direct Connect, try resetting your Direct Connect password in Online Banking. This is done by selecting the Additional Services tab and selecting Connect to Quicken/QuickBooks. Your Quicken/QuickBooks password must be different from your Online Banking password.

      Windows uses file associations to identify which program should handle a type of file. If your file association is incorrect or damaged, you might not be able to complete a Web Connect online banking session.

      To reset file associations:

    • Click the Start button and select the Control Panel. In Windows 10, the Control Panel is located in the Windows System folder in the Start menu.
    • Select Programs > Default Programs > Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
    • Scroll down the list of file types and click on QFX.
    • Select Change Program.

      While the steps to download a Web Connect file are fairly simple, navigating through the financial institution’s website to locate the file can be difficult. Here are some tips:

    • After signing into the financial institution’s website, look for a link titled or Export. The exact wording may vary.
    • In some cases, the link will instead be a clickable symbol for downloading. See the examples below:
      • Sometimes the Download button or link will only appear if you are viewing an account .
    • Once you have navigated to the download page, most banks will have settings you will need to configure before starting the download. Similar to the sample below. Make sure to select the Quicken format and adjust for the dates you want to download.
      • Sometimes, depending on the web browser being used and the settings, the Web Connect file has downloaded but isn’t automatically opening in Quicken. There may be an icon or button that needs to be clicked first to continue the process, such as the ones below:

      Ok So How Does It Work

      Depending on the services supported by your bank, Quicken chooses the best available method to update transactions and balances. Quicken will always start with Direct Connect if your bank supports it. Your bank will typically have you give them a call to establish Direct Connect, since real-time transfers of money are involved. If your bank doesn’t support Direct Connect, then you’ll be automatically set up to use Express Web Connect/Quicken Connect. Express Web Connect/Quicken Connect are the most common connection types.

      Note: Most banks make the last 90 days of transactions available for download. If you need transactions from before those 90 days, contact your bank for assistance.

      There Are Three Ways Quicken Interacts With Your Bank:

      • Express Web Connect
      • Direct Connect
      • Web Connect

      Web Connect is, simply put, a way you can download your transactions directly from your bank’s website and import them into Quicken.

      With the Express Web Connect /Quicken Connect and Direct Connect methods, Quicken communicates directly with your bank on your behalf.       Set Up An Account For Online Banking

    • Choose Tools > Add Account
    • After you choose the type of account you want to add, you will see the financial institution selection screen. Type the name of your financial institution to filter the list.

      Creating An Online Payment

      After you have added your online payees, you are ready to create an online bill payment.

    • Choose Tools > Online Center.
    • Choose your financial institution from the drop-down list.
    • Select the Payments tab and type your payees name in the Payee field.
    • Fill in the remaining fields for the payment that you wish to make then click Enter.
    • Click Update/Send to send your payment.

      What If Quicken Tells Me To Accept Downloaded Transactions Before Deactivating Online Services

      Quicken will not deactivate online services if you have not accepted all downloaded transactions. Verify that you have accepted all transactions.

    • Open the account register and select the tab at the bottom of the register. If there are not any transactions listed, skip to step 3.
    • Accept all transactions and then follow the steps above to deactivate online services.
    • Select the Tools menu and select Online Center.
    • Select the appropriate financial institution and account.
    • Select Transactions.
    • If transactions are listed, click Compare to Register and accept the transactions.
    • If no transactions are listed or Compare to Register does not allow you to accept the transactions, additional information is available on the support site.

      In some cases, online banking may not function properly after upgrading to the latest version of Quicken. This situation is typically caused by changes in the way online services are handled in the different versions of Quicken. The following procedure shows how to correct this issue.

      If you are unable to connect, then your account may need to be deactivated and reactivated. This can be done by following the directions below:

    • In Quicken, go to Tools > Account List.
    • Find the account in the list, and click Edit.
    • Click on the Online Services tab.
    • Click Deactivate.
    • Click Yes on the confirmation prompt.
    • Repeat steps 1-5 for each affected account.
    • When finished, close and reopen Quicken.
    • Walk through this process as if you were going to add a new account, providing the login credentials and answering any security questions/processes presented, UNTIL you reach the screen where Quicken displays the accounts discovered at the financial institution
    • Very carefully LINK each of the found accounts to the appropriate account you already have setup in Quicken.
    • If you are still having problems downloading, then write down the exact error message you’re receiving and search our support site for a different resolution.

      You can check for an exact error message/number by going to Tools > One Step Update Summary. In many cases, you will have the option to click Learn More for additional information on the error.

      Issues You May Encounter

      Reactivating an account is a simple process, but you may find you encounter one or more of the conditions below, depending on the reason for the original Deactivate and the new Reactivate.

      Duplicate Transactions

      If you deactivated the account in order to change the Connection Method , Reactivating for the new connection method may result in a re-download of the most recent 90 days of transactions .

      These duplicate transactions should Match to those that already exist in the account register, but you should review the data after the reactivation to ensure you’re not seeing duplicates in your account register.

      Once a duplicate transaction already exists in your account register, the only solution is to delete it.

      Online Bill Pay Service Unavailable

      If you were using your bank’s online bill payment service and have been told to deactivate your Direct Connect accounts, the reactivation for Express Web Connect will not offer the bank’s bill pay service.

      If you were advised by your bank to make this change because they will no longer offer this service through Quicken, one alternative is to sign up for Quicken Bill Manager. For more information, .

      If you choose to continue using your bank’s bill pay service, you can still make payments at the bank’s website and the posted payments would continue to download to Quicken via Express Web Connect update.
