Bank Of America Auto Pay: How To Set Up Autopay For Your Credit Cards

How to Setup AutoPay for Bank of America Credit Cards

If youre like me, you want to manage your finances as simply as possible, with minimum room for human error. To me, this includes setting up auto pay on every new credit card I open.

Over the years, Ive found Bank of Americas auto pay set up flow to be one of the worst out there. It took me much longer than I care to admit to finally set up auto pay on these cards, despite that fact that my oldest credit line and my checking account is through Bank of America.

So, for all the people out there who find Bank of Americas auto pay process just as counterintuitive as I did, heres a step-by-step walk-through of how to stop paying your credit card bills manually and make sure that you never miss a payment.

Setting up AutoPay

Once youre logged into your account, navigate over to the Payment Center, under the Bill Pay tab at the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

On this page, youll see a list of your Bank of America credit cards, along with any other payments you might have set up. A semi-recent update to this page is that it will be obvious which accounts have auto pay set up, and which dont. Ive already set up auto pay for my most used card, but my other card, highlighted below in red, doesnt have the green ON indicator.

If youve never set up an eBill, youll have to go through an extra click, but its fairly straight-foward. The below screenshot is from when I set up eBills last year, so it may look a little different for you.

It Takes Time For Payments To Be Processed

There is a lag between the time you set a payment to be made, and the time it actually gets posted on your credit card account. So:

  • Take note of how long it typically takes for your payment to process and post from your bank account.
  • Then factor in that time lag when you set your automatic payment date, so the payment gets posted before your credit card bill’s due date.

Automatic Payment Pitfalls To Watch Out For

With all of the benefits offered through automatic payments, there are some pitfalls and potential problems to watch out for. The biggest pitfall people sometimes experience with automatic payments is a little mistake that can add up to hundreds of dollars. Let’s say you set all of your accounts to get paid automatically, but then have an unexpected change in your income. If your income fluctuates, or a paycheck isn’t deposited on time for any reason, you may find yourself with a bank account balance that isn’t high enough to cover all of your automatic payments. This results in overdrafts that can quickly add up. If you had not been using automatic payments, a change in your income or delayed deposit isn’t as big of a deal, since you could just hold off making your bill payment until the deposit clears.

If you are using your bank’s online bill pay feature, make sure you know whether or not there is a fee for this service. Some banks offer online bill pay through savings accounts or checking accounts for free, while others charge a monthly service fee for access. Most online banks offer online bill payment for free.

You must schedule your payment in advance of the payment due date. There will be a delay between the Payment Send On date and the date the payee receives your payment. Schedule the payment in accordance with the payment rules displayed on the Make Payment screens.

  • Check payments: Payment Send On date must be at least five business days before the date your payment is due to the payee.
  • Electronic payments: Payment Send On date must be at least two business days before the date your payment is due to the payee.

For scheduling purposes, you should count the first business day after your scheduled Payment Send On date as business day one.

Wells Fargo does not recognize Grace Periods, Late After, or Postmarked By dates when considering the reimbursement of late fees or finance charges.

Automatic payments could help your credit score, but only if you time the payment to happen before the credit card’s statement due date and around the same time you know there will be enough money into your bank account. Making even one late payment could ultimately hurt your credit score.

As a safety net, consider setting up overdraft protection for your bank accounts, so that you can be more aware of the fees that might activate if you happen to charge more than you currently have in your account. Overdraft protection may provide an overview of what fees you might owe and other procedures you might need to be aware of if you do overdraft your account.

Set Up Autopay On Bank Of America Credit Card

August 14, 2018Keywords: Bank of America, bill payment,

I have autopay set up on all my bills: credit cards, utilities, insurance, everything. Whatever amount comes due, the company pulls the money from my checking account on the due date. Some people worry that this gives the companies too much privilege over their bank account. I can only say that in over 10 years among all the companies that I had autopay with, no one ever pulled the wrong amount or a duplicate from my bank account.

I like autopay because I dont ever have to worry about paying bills or whether the companies credit my payments on time. Once I set up autopay, paying the bill in full on time becomes their responsibility. I only need to make sure I have enough money in my checking account. I still look at the paperless bills to make sure they are correct, but I dont do anything to pay them. If I go out of the country for a year, all my bills will still be paid like clockwork without my ever logging into my bank account.

Most companies make it easy to set up autopay. They too love to have the assurance that their bills are paid in full on time. They usually have a place on their website for you to give them the routing number and the account number of your checking account. Some companies do a test deposit to validate the account. Some dont even do that.

Lenders use credit history to assess the probability that an individual will repay loans on time and in full . Its worth keeping in mind that its not always a smart concept to close a charge account that is not being utilized since doing so can reduce your credit score by affecting your credit rating age & amount of open credit offered to you.

How Can I Set Up A Recurring Payment To An Individual

What methods are there for me to transfer X dollars per month, directly to another individual’s bank account? I’d rather avoid sending a check every month and the attendant hassle when a check goes missing, so best is something involving direct deposit and ACH.

Both banks are in the USA. On my bank’s side I have access to “bill pay”, and I can get their routing/account numbers. But as far as I can tell “bill pay” would simply result in a paper check going out.

I’ve checked and with paypal this is sort of possible, but it’s treated as a business service and comes with fees.

I know in Europe this is done all the time, and it routine. In the USA not so much.

  • 2I’m not aware of a way to this without fees, so I’m not writing an answer. I can confirm, however, that for my bank if you do “bill pay” that would result in a paper check going in the mail. Maybe other banks are different, but I doubt it. user32479Sep 29 ’15 at 14:15
  • I assume you’ve tried setting up a recurring automated transfer using online banking? Setting up a recurring transfer is usually as easy as setting up a one-time transfer, but of course your bank may not allow any online transfers, or charge a fee.

I think about as close as you’re going to get is to use a personal PayPal account, and set up a reminder to yourself to log in and send the money.

Automatic Bill Pay Through Your Credit Card

Many companies now accept credit card payments online, and thats a much safer way to automate paying your bills.

Credit cards offer far better protection for you as a consumer, which is why you should always use a credit card for any payments that could potentially cause you problems like online transactions.

You can set up automatic payments through the company to pay each bill before the due date each month.

Then, if you see a suspicious charge, you can dispute it immediately, and the process of getting your money back is usually a lot easier than with debit cards or automatic debit transactions.

Using a credit card could also have the benefit of racking up card rewards or cash back with money youd be paying toward your bills anyway.

Remember, though, that even when you set up your automatic payments on a credit card, its crucial that you review your statement each month for any potential errors or false charges. That way you can report them immediately.

How Do I Activate Ebills

You can activate eBills for participating payees from the Bill Pay home screen, the Manage Payee screen for that payee, or while youre setting up a new payee. Youll fill out some account and billing information, so you may want to have a paper bill handy for reference.

Once you activate eBills, you can choose to pay that eBill manually or set up automatic payments.

Please be sure to read the payees terms and conditions carefully when available. Sometimes signing up to receive an online bill means that your paper bills will be turned off, but this should be stated in the payees terms and conditions.
