How Can You Transfer Money From A Prepaid Card To A Bank Account

Before starting the transfer process, you need to understand whether the card can be used anywhere. Some cards only allow you to use them at specific stores and thus it might be difficult to transfer funds from such cards to a bank account. Other cards can be used anywhere and this makes it easy to transfer funds from them.

If your card can be used anywhere, you can then log into your account online and check whether it allows the transfer of funds to a bank account. It is always advisable to have an online account for your prepaid card. Information about funds transfer is in the FAQ section or on the card benefits page. If it allows, then you are good to proceed.

The next step is to link your prepaid card with your bank account. You require the routing and the account number of the bank account. It is just the same way you send money with a checking account number from one bank account to another account of a different bank.

The routing number is a nine digit number normally printed on your check. You can see your checkbook and see it. It shows where you opened your bank account. If you do not have a checkbook, you can check on your banks website and search the routing number of your bank for the area you opened your account.

When the money is transferred successfully, you might see a pop-up message on the screen confirming the transfer or receive a text/email for the same.

Getting Cash From A Prepaid Visa Card

If you want to transfer cash from a Visa gift card, there are steps you need to take first to be sure that your requested transfer will go through. First, check to make sure the card hasn’t expired. If it has expired, any funds left on the card now belong to the card issuer again. Also, check to determine whether the card is transferrable. If it is, then you may not be able to transfer funds from it either. Next, if you have used the card for an extended time, there may be an inactivity fee. Check that out to make sure you account for that fee if any, when making a transfer from the card to your bank account.

Finally, confirm the balance on the card. There is usually a telephone number or website URL in the fine print on the back that will let you find out what is left on the card. Then, you can judge the fees for the transfer to the amount you can transfer and decide whether it’s worth getting the cash or if you should just spend the balance of the card.

Prepaid cards vary widely, but they tend to have these features in common:

Fees: You might have to pay for activating or getting a card, making deposits and using out-of-network ATMs. Theres often a monthly fee, which sometimes can be waived by having direct deposits, for example. Some cards charge a fee for every purchase and ATM transaction.

Reload options: You can usually add money to a card in multiple ways, such as setting up direct deposits, loading cash at participating retailers and depositing checks at ATMs. Some cards also let you make online transfers or mobile check deposits from a smartphone.

ATM access: Some prepaid cards have access to free nationwide ATM networks, such as MoneyPass and Allpoint, or to branded bank networks for cards issued by banks.

Amount limits: Some cards restrict how much you can withdraw, reload or spend during a certain period, such as a day or month.

Protections: Reloadable prepaid cards have the liability and fraud protections required of debit cards by federal law. Some cards offer purchase protections, but it can be difficult to dispute unauthorized transactions or correct errors. One safeguard many cards have is federal deposit insurance, meaning your money is covered if an issuer becomes bankrupt.

Other features: Some prepaid cards offer check writing, online bill pay and multiple copies of a card for family members. A rare few even offer rewards such as cash back on purchases, similar to what rewards credit cards do.
