Money in minutes. Money sent with Zelle is designed to deliver payments, typically within minutes. All it takes is for your debit card to be activatedwhich you can do online or via our mobile app. Once your card is activated, select Send Money, then Send Money with Zelle to get started. For future scheduled payments, funds will be available on the delivery day you select.
What if theyre not enrolled? If you send money through Zelle with an email or phone number to someone who isnt enrolled, they’ll receive a notification that prompts them to enroll. No Protection Programs For Zelle Users
If you want to delete Zelle from your mobile banking app, you may have had some bad experience using it. The most common reason for canceling the service is when people encounter fraud when sending money to people they dont know.
One of the common fraud examples is buying concert tickets from other people online. Thats especially true when making such purchases on websites like Craigs List. Because they provide a free exchange between people, none of these websites provide any customer protection for the transactions their users make.
When you encounter a fraud, theres a common practice involved. Right after you contact the seller about the tickets you want to purchase, theyll inform you the only way to pay them is over Zelle. If you already have it, sending money this way is a breeze. If not, you can sign up for Zelle in a matter of minutes. So, you send your hard-earned money to the ticket seller, and you wait for the tickets to arrive at your address.
Unfortunately, in this example, they never do. The person who sold you the tickets takes your money and never sends you the tickets. And theres absolutely nothing you can do to retrieve the money you sent. That even applies when both of you use the same bank.

Decide How Much To Send
Different banks and credit unions have various limits on how much money you can send with Zelle. If your bank or credit union does not offer Zelle, and you need to use the Zelle app, you are limited to sending $500 per week via the Zelle app. Zelle may be best for small, fast payments. If you need to send a larger amount of money, you may want to choose a different payment option.

How Does It Work
Zelle has over 800 partner financial institutions. As long as the person either transferring or receiving the money belongs to one of these institutions, transferring money is a seamless, quick process.
Zelle can be accessed through your banks mobile app if they are a Zelle partner or through Zelles app. After youre enrolled, you can send money simply by having the email address or the phone number of the person you want to send money to.
Once you send money, the recipient will receive it in their bank account in minutes. If they arent already enrolled with Zelle, theyll receive a notification telling them how to access their money.
Is Zelle Safer Than Venmo
Zelle, being a bank-backed app, clearly has the competitive advantage here. However, while Zelle may appear more secure, applications like Venmo and PayPal are just as secure. All of them use data encryption to protect users against unauthorized transactions and store users’ data on servers in secure locations.

Competition With Paypal’s Venmo Service
The Zelle service’s principal competitor is PayPal and its Venmo payment service. Venmo is more popular, based on public awareness, opinion polling, and active engagement with users, but Zelle processes a much larger dollar volume of money transfersreportedly US$75 billion in its first year, 2017.
The two services work very similarly from the user’s perspective e.g., both services use email addresses and mobile phone numbers to identify recipients, but Venmo lacks the direct integration with banking institutions that Zelle has, and Zelle money transfers are typically processed more quickly.
Starting in January 2018, Venmo began to also offer a more rapid transfer option than its typical 13 day transfer service, but Venmo charges a fee for the service, while Zelle-affiliated banks currently do not.
The Zelle network itself does not charge users a fee for money transfers. Banks are allowed to charge a fee for Zelle transfers involving their accounts, but they have generally not chosen to do so.
It is not possible to cancel a payment to an existing Venmo account unless the recipient gives their explicit permission. Once a payment is sent, the funds are available to the recipient right away. The only exception is if payment is sent to a phone number or email address that has not been registered with a Venmo account. Like Venmo, Zelle payments to a registered user cannot be canceled.

Manage Zelle Recipients In The Bank Of America Mobile Banking App
If you have a Bank of America check account, then you probably have the mobile banking app. If you dont, make sure to download and install it from App Store or Play Store. If not, you can still use BofAs online banking portal on a web browser.
Zelle is a convenient way to transfer money and it has a lot of neat features. One of which is that you dont have to add recipients to your contact list manually.
In fact, when you use the Zelle feature in the BofA app, that happens automatically.
This means that whenever someone sends you money for the first time, or if youre to request it, the app adds this person to your list of recipients.
However, you can add a recipient even before any transactions take place. All you really have to do is go to Transfer Zelle and then Recipients and add the persons email address or phone number. You can browse your entire contact list and edit or delete recipients from there.
Does Zelle Charge A Fee
Unlike certain other P2P transfer services, Zelle does not charge any fees. Venmo and Cashapp charge fees if users send money using a credit card, and if users want to immediately deposit funds into their bank account. These fees can range from 1.5% to 3% and can make the transfer of large amounts costly.

Unfortunately You Cannot Use Zelle To Send Money Abroad
Its difficult to imagine our lives today without online payment services and mobile wallets. We appreciate how easy these have made it for us to enjoy online shopping. More importantly, though, theyve made quick payments and sending money to our near and dear almost effortless.
The problem? We have access to money-transfer and payment providers like Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App, all of which come with various benefits. And yet, were always on the hunt for the best deal, especially when sending money internationally. Sadly, some providers dont offer such services, or worse, top each transfer with ridiculously high fees. Zelle is one of them, as it sadly does not let us send money abroad.
Since Zelle works only within the US and when using US bank accounts, its impossible to use its services to send money internationally. The provider doesnt support accounts based in US Territories either. These include:
- US Virgin Islands
- American Samoa
Also, Zelle does not accept all cards but instead focuses on debit cards . You cannot use its services with:
- International cards
- Prepaid cards issued by financial institutions that arent a part of the Zelle Network
- Gift cards
