How Cashier’s Checks Work
An ordinary personal check is a legal document that tells your bank to pay the amount written on the check to the person named on it. While it’s illegal to purposely write a check knowing you don’t have the funds in your account to pay it, it’s not uncommon for checks to bounce, or fail to be backed by sufficient funds. That means that there’s a risk in accepting checks as payment, since you may have to chase down the person who issued the check if it bounces.
Video of the Day
In some cases, you can get around this risk problem by demanding payment in cash, but that’s often not practical for big purchases such as real estate, cars and other expensive items. Another alternative is to require payment with what’s called a cashier’s check or bank check. A cashier’s check is a check drawn against the bank’s own funds rather than an individual account holder’s, so it’s very unlikely to bounce and can often clear faster than a traditional personal check.
Try Visiting The Check
The safest and fastest way to get cash is to take your check to the check writer’s bank. Thats the bank or credit union that holds the check writer’s funds, and you can get the money out of the check writers account and into your hands instantly at that bank. If you go to any other bank, you cant be completely certain that the check is good and the funds are in the check writer’s account.
You can find the bank’s name or logo on the front of the check. You dont have to go to the same branch the check writer uses you can visit any branch of the same bank. Be sure to bring identification and be sure it matches the name written on the check.
If you dont have an account at that bank, you may need to pay a modest fee of a few dollars to get the check cashed. You might even find that the bank refuses to cash the check for you because youre not a customer. Also, depending on the size of the check, you may not be able to cash it because some banks have a limit on how much cash they can dispense. It will help if you go to one of the bank’s larger branches, which usually have more funds available.
The Bank Listed On The Check
If youre trying to cash a check without a bank account, the easiest place to start is with the bank on the check youre trying to cash.
To find this information, simply look above the memo line in the bottom left corner. Call a local branch to find out its check cashing policy.
It can easily verify the availability of funds by checking the account balance of the one who wrote you the check. Some banks will even give the account owner a phone call on the spot as a security measure to ensure there is no fraud taking place.
The bank listed on the check used to be the cheapest option to get your cash. Now, most of the big banks have started implementing fees to get your check cashed if you do not have an account with them. Most charge a flat rate or a percentage of the check amount up to a certain maximum.
Every bank will have different terms and requirements to cash checks that are tied to its institution. The most foolproof option is to call ahead and ask about its policy and fees.
Youll need 1-2 forms of valid ID to confirm the check is yours, so make sure to bring a drivers license, passport, or another government-issued ID card.

Your Neighborhood Convenience Store
Tens of thousands of convenience stores owned by dozens of regional and national brands offer check-cashing services in the United States. Two particularly popular convenience store brands are worth noting here.
- 7-Eleven. 7-Eleven is arguably the most popular convenience store for check cashing. Thats due not just to its ubiquity but to its handy, user-friendly prepaid debit card and app, 7-Eleven. Trans@acts Mobile Check Load feature enables free mobile check deposit from anywhere with an Internet connection no trip to the store necessary.
- Circle K. Most Circle K locations sell Green Dot reloadable prepaid debit cards, which can be loaded with funds from payroll checks and certain other types of nonpersonal checks. Load fees vary by product, some of which also carry a monthly fee see Green Dots cardholder agreements for details.
Like brethren in the supermarket industry, many convenience store chains dont actively advertise check-cashing services online. If its not clear from the Web that your preferred outpost cashes checks, it never hurts to call ahead.

None of them cash checks!
One of my favorite stores is Costco and it turns out that Costco does not cash checks. The same holds true for their two wholesale club competitors. BJS Wholesale Club and Sams Club do not cash checks either of any kind.
What is surprising is that they dont cash business checks, payroll checks, or even government checks . I thought theyd at least take government checks as they are the safest, but nope!
Expensive Places To Cash A Personal Check
So the above were some of the best options for you to cash a check. But I also wanted to include some places you might want to avoid because of the much higher fees.
Of course, if you are absolutely strapped for cash or in a bind, then you potentially may need to visit one of these places. However, Id certainly avoid it if possible.
So if you go to search online for, Where can I cash a personal check near me, youll probably get a few options or some ads near the top as well.
But what you will most likely find is payday loan providers or check cashing stores listed.
I dont recommend doing business with any check cashing stores, title loan and payday loan companies, as they are one of the most expensive options for cashing a personal check.
Some of the payday loan providers will require a or may need the person who issued you the check to be in person.
Each of these places operate with different policies, so if you have no choice to go to one make sure you call up first.
Lastly, the fees.
This is the main reason I recommend avoiding them if possible as you will pay high interest or even a flat fee plus the interest too. Each store is different, so there may be some that have more sensible fees, but be warned!
