How Does Taxact Work

Enrolling in Bank Products

TaxAct is a tax software company founded in 1998. Based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, TaxAct is one of the biggest names in the industry.

When you first initiate the tax filing process with TaxAct, you will be guided through a series of questions. You’ll be asked if you have children, run a business, own a home, have student loans, and more.

All these questions allow TaxAct to recommend the best package for your tax situation. The interface of each package is slightly different, providing those with simple tax returns and those with self-employment income with appropriately different experiences. You may also choose to have an expert file your taxes for you.

As you’re guided through the tax-prep process, TaxAct pays particular attention to areas where “double answering” is common. For example, self-employed individuals with marketplace healthcare plans can potentially qualify for multiple credits, so you have to be sure you don’t double dip with the same qualified healthcare premiums. TaxAct catches these common errors, notifying you about what it’s doing behind the scenes to ensure all your calculations are accurate.

All plans allow you to upload or import W-2s and 1099s for easy data entry.

Taxact Review: How Does It Work

TaxAct is simple to use and allows you to skip between different sections. It uses an interview process to determine which forms you will need to file. Plus, there are tips and resources throughout the program, so you can get the help you need.

You can pick a package to place in your shopping cart and choose add-on products. To help you get started, TaxAct allows you to import your previous tax return from H& R Block or TurboTax. It only allows you to import your 1040, which could be an issue if you filed other schedules or forms.

In addition to auto-importing your W-2s, you can also photograph your W-2s to upload them into the app. Because TaxAct is entirely online, you can do your taxes from any mobile device. Plus, you can access tech support by phone or email. If you buy the Xpert Help package, you can get on-screen tax advice from a live professional.

Our TaxAct review also examined audits. If you are audited, there is additional support available. TaxActs audit support will tell you what to expect and what you should do to prepare for your audit. Like most tax software, TaxAct does not offer audit defense. If you need legal defense with the Internal Revenue Service , you will have to hire a tax professional on your own. You can also get a Protection Plus plan through TaxActs partner company if you want audit defense.

Laws acquire popular names as they make their way through Congress. Sometimes these names say something about the substance of the law . Sometimes they are a way of recognizing or honoring the sponsor or creator of a particular law . And sometimes they are meant to garner political support for a law by giving it a catchy name or by invoking public outrage or sympathy . History books, newspapers, and other sources use the popular name to refer to these laws. Why can’t these popular names easily be found in the US Code?

The United States Code is meant to be an organized, logical compilation of the laws passed by Congress. At its top level, it divides the world of legislation into fifty topically-organized Titles, and each Title is further subdivided into any number of logical subtopics. In theory, any law — or individual provisions within any law — passed by Congress should be classifiable into one or more slots in the framework of the Code. On the other hand, legislation often contains bundles of topically unrelated provisions that collectively respond to a particular public need or problem. A farm bill, for instance, might contain provisions that affect the tax status of farmers, their management of land or treatment of the environment, a system of price limits or supports, and so on. Each of these individual provisions would, logically, belong in a different place in the Code.

Does Taxact Make Tax Filing Easy In 2022

In 2022, TaxAct advanced in the ranks of usability. The company now supports prior-year imports, W-2 imports, and 1099-B imports. These import options will serve many filers who want to minimize administrative headaches. However, the software still does not support 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, or 1099-NEC imports which H& R Block and TurboTax both support.Software navigation also improved in the last year. TaxAct has a clean, user-friendly interface. But the software still gets bogged down in tax jargon in certain sections. Given the companys pricing, we expect more from the software.
