What Bank Has The Best Overdraft Protection

Review Of The Top 5 Banks With No Overdraft Fees

Why You Should Opt Out of Overdraft Protection

Okay, now on to my favorite section – banks that dont charge overdraft fees. What a novel idea! Its becoming increasingly common for banks, especially these new online banks, to not charge overdraft fees. Its a competitive advantage they can use to acquire customers. Instead of relying on overdraft fees to make money, they rely on what are called interchange fees. Whenever you make a purchase using your everyday debit card, VISA/Mastercard collects a small interchange fee from the merchant . This fee is then split between the bank associated with the debit card and VISA/Mastercard. This debit fee has increased over time and has enabled online banks to rely solely on this fee. No more overdraft fees!

Below you will find a list of some of our favorite banks that do not charge overdraft fees:

The Short: When you think online-banks, you think Chime. They are growing rapidly in the digital-banking space, with allegedly more than 5 million accounts. Their app interface is simple and easy to use. With hardly any fees and new features constantly rolling out, theyre a great option for someone in search of a new checking/savings account.

Best Checking Accounts With Free Overdraft Protection Plans

While checking accounts that dont allow overdrafting are ideal, there are other accounts great for those who find themselves often going overboard. A number of checking accountsmany of which are offered by traditional brick-and-mortar banksoffer overdraft transfer protection plans with no fees.

There are a number of benefits associated with accounts like this: Youre protected from overdrafting and any fees or interest that might come with it but you are also safe from embarrassment or inconvenience of having your card declined if you have insufficient funds.

There are drawbacks, though, that come with overdraft protection plans. In some cases, they come with strings attached, like needing to have sufficient funds in any accounts you link to cover the costs of a potential overdraft. If you arent careful, they can also drain the savings you worked so hard to build up.

We identified the best checking accounts that offer free transfers for overdraft protection if certain conditions are met. To be included on our list, accounts also had to have no monthly fees or minimum balance requirements. While offering an APY was not a requirement, it was considered as an added bonus.

What Is A Prepaid Cards Spending Limit

Just as its name suggests, a prepaid card lets you prepay for purchases by depositing money into a card account that will cover the cost of your future transactions.

As such, your prepaid cards spending limit equals the amount of money you have deposited into your account. Most cards will not allow you to spend beyond your current account balance. Others may provide a $10 cushion beyond your balance but you will be charged an overdraft fee of between $15 and $20 if you do not bring your balance back to at least $0 within a set amount of time.

Prepaid cards do not have a line of credit attached to them , which means you do not have a spending limit as you would with a traditional credit card.

Think of a prepaid card as a form of debit card. A debit card ties to a savings account or checking account and only allows you to spend the amount of money you have in the account.

Once you have spent the money you deposited, the card will no longer allow further purchases until you add more money to the account. Many people prefer this type of card because it helps them stay on a strict budget and does not provide the temptation to overspend.

Some prepaid cards can provide a small line of credit in the form of overdraft protection. With this service, you can occasionally spend slightly more than the amount in your account and a partner bank will cover your transaction.

Use Cash For All Purchases

HSBC Bank Overdraft Protection Fees May Have Violated ...

Its not the most convenient thing to go to the bank and withdraw cash whenever you need to spend money.

To get around doing this, take out as much money as you can and leave just enough in to pay your mortgage, car payment, and any monthly bills you have. Leave your debit card and credit card at home, and only take just enough cash with you when you go out.

This way, your budget is a very real one. If you go over, you cant pay for what youre trying to purchase. Its not stressful its practical. Use your phone as a calculator, know your states sales tax, and youll be just fine.

Groceries are what really get people into a bind when using this system. For cash to work when grocery shopping, you need to have a list with every item on it before you go out.

Stick to the list, know how much your bill will be before you even get to the register, and buy nothing else. Over time, you can save buckets of money doing this.

What Rules Do Banks Have To Follow On Overdrafts

We’ve repeatedly reported that unarranged overdraft charges can be more expensive than using a payday loan, and weve been campaigning to get banks to bring them in line with those for arranged overdrafts.

The Financial Conduct Authority eventually stepped in, announcing new rules to fix the dysfunctional overdraft market, in force from 6 April 2020.

This means banks and building societies must:

  • stop charging higher prices for unarranged overdrafts than for arranged overdrafts
  • scrap fixed daily or monthly charges and fees for having an overdraft facility
  • price overdrafts by a simple annual interest rate to help customers compare them against other products
  • to do more to identify customers who are showing signs of financial and implement a strategy to reduce repeat overdraft use.

Introducing a flat rate puts prevents banks from making large profits on the backs of the most financially vulnerable. However, the FCA stopped short of placing a cap on the cost and some of the largest banks introduced rates as high as 39.9% AER.

This prevents banks from making large profits on the backs of the most financially vulnerable, however, some customers will see the cost of borrowing rise steeply.

What To Watch Out For

The availability of low-cost checking accounts can save some consumers hundreds of dollars, says Aaron Klein, senior fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution. But be aware that these options differ in their terms and features, and some will do more to protect you from fees than others.

Ally, for example, simply eliminates overdraft fees. Customers who incur an overdraft have at least six business days to bring their account back to a positive balance. If you dont, your account withdrawals may be limited.

Wells Fargos Clear Access Banking account, which follows the Bank On blueprint for no-overdraft-fee checking accounts, charges a flat $5 monthly fee .

PNC Banks Low Cash Mode accounts give customers at least 24 hours to bring up their balances. Otherwise, a $36 fee is assessed once a day.

Even if overdraft fees are waived, banks can levy fees in other ways, says Syed Ejaz, policy analyst at Consumer Reports. For example, you could be charged ATM fees and returned-check fees.

What Is A Prepaid Card

Banks with the best overdraft protection

A prepaid card is a financial product that is very similar to a debit card a bank or credit union would issue you.

With a prepaid card, you deposit money into a secure account that links to your card. Every time you use your card to make a purchase, the amount spent is deducted from your cash account. In most cases, your card spending cannot exceed the amount of money you have deposited into your account.

Depending on which prepaid card you have, you can deposit money into your account in several ways.

Some cards, such as the ACE Elite® Visa® Prepaid Debit Card, work through ACE Cash Express a payday loan center that has more than 950 locations throughout the U.S. Cardholders can deposit money by visiting a location with cash or a check.

All prepaid card accounts allow you to deposit money electronically through a linked checking or savings account. You can also have your payroll checks or government benefits checks directly deposited into your account. Some card issuers may charge a reload fee if you deposit money in person instead of through a direct deposit.

Because these cards provide flexibility in how you add money to your account and they take away the hassle of carrying cash many consumers choose to use their prepaid card account as a bank account.

In 2018 alone, the use of prepaid cards accounted for 10.5% of all card payments in the U.S. That year, more than $350 billion was spent using prepaid cards.

Can I Get An Overdraft With A Joint Bank Account

Most joint bank accounts are run on an either-to-sign basis where all parties can authorise transactions and make decisions independently.

Crucially, this means anyone can increase or decrease an overdraft. And, each person is responsible for the overdraft, even if they didnt run up the debt.

Banks can even transfer money from any other accounts you hold with them to cover the debt on your joint account .

The Best Banks For Avoiding Overdraft Fees

To avoid overdraft fees, your best bet will be banking with an online bank. Because their operating expenses are significantly lower than traditional banks, they dont rely on overdraft fees as a source of revenue.

If a traditional brick-and-mortar bank is the only realistic option for your banking needs, you can also compare the fees from your local bank options. Keep in mind that credit unions are also an affordable alternative if you dont need a bank with a national presence.

The following online and traditional banks have the best overdraft fee policies. If you dont need the capability to handwrite checks or need in-person concierge services, online banks are an excellent option.

As you will see, the online banks with the lowest overdraft fees are online banks that dont offer a paper checkbook. Some online banks still provide a paper checkbook for you to write handwritten checks, but your overdraft fees will usually be higher.

If youre serious about switching banks to avoid overdraft fees, you need to avoid the traditional big name banks with a national presence:

  • Bank of America
  • Citibank
  • Well Fargo

Even if you can get waived overdraft fees, you may have to pay a monthly account fee or maintain a high account balance. Either of these two requirements can be a drag on your finances and building your net worth.

What Is Overdraft Protection

Overdraft protection is a service provided by your bank that ensures your transactions are covered if you have insufficient funds in your checking account. The bank will automatically move funds you have available in another linked account to the overdrawn account.

The bank may charge you for this service, but the price is usually considerably less than paying an overdraft fee. The average overdraft fee is $33.47 per transaction, according to Bankrates 2020 checking account survey.

Overdraft protection policies, including whether a fee is charged, vary by bank. Ask your financial institution to explain the details so you can decide if overdraft protection is right for you.
