Its hard to overlook the low-interest rate but if you want a simple, straight-forward bank with automatic savings, no fees, and a debit card Chime does this.

They get good marks on their app and their user experience, the only thing dragging down their rating is the interest rate. To be fair though, the difference between 1% and 0% is minor. Id prefer 1% but you get a few perks in return.

Considering they dont charge you anything else, theyre an attractive option if you like automatic savings but dont want to pay $5/mo to the likes of Digit .

A wave of digital-first challengers to traditional banks has attracted millions of customers with free accounts and hassle-free sign-ups. But a recent report highlights some risks of entrusting money to neobanks, financial tech companies that partner with established financial institutions to provide banking services.

The nonprofit news organization ProPublica reported July 6 that customers of Chime, one of the largest neobanks, have had their accounts closed without notice, leaving them with no way to access their money. ProPublicas report included interviews with 13 former or current Chime customers as well as publicly available customer complaints.

Chime has according to experts been generating a high rate of complaints, with 920 filed at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau since April 15, 2020, ProPublica reported. Of those complaints, 197 more than 20% were categorized as involving a closed account. Complaints to the CFPB also mention slow response times, sometimes weeks, from Chime customer support.

What Advantages Does Chime Have Over Chase Bank

Chime Bank down? App login issues, Aug 2021

Chime offers way less fees, more flexibility in where you can withdraw money from ATMs, a better mobile interface and banking experience, and way better interest rates than Chase does on your savings ultimately the only problem with Chime in our opinion is to deposit cash into your account youd have to either buy a money order or deposit it at a Green Dot reload location which isnt hard to find or do but in our opinion its more annoying than simply showing up to a Chase ATM and depositing the cash into the ATM.

If you think Chime is right for you then make sure to check out their current promotions, or simply sign up through a referral link;such as this one;to receive their standard bonus of $50 when signing up and depositing $200 or more via Direct-Deposit.

Who Should Use Chime For Banking

What demographic does Chime appeal to most? Thats a tricky question. Chime definitely caters toward digital natives who have never had a traditional bank account or people who have negative banking histories.

But its a great option for anyone open to banking through an online-only company.

Youd do well to consider Chime if you:

  • Are comfortable with mobile banking and dont need access to a physical branch.
  • Want access to a company that charges you fewer fees for banking services and pays you more interest than a traditional bank.
  • Dont need to make regular cash deposits.
  • Dont currently have a bank or have a negative banking history.
  • Can make at least $500 per month in direct deposits to your Chime account.

To the last point, most traditional banks use their own equivalent of a credit score, called ChexSystems, to decide whether to let you open an account. If youve had trouble opening a traditional bank account due to past issues, Chime a second chance bank could work for you.

Recently, there have been several reports in the media and in places where people congregate online that Chime has been abruptly closing customer accounts. Possibly as a fraud prevention measure.

Some affected account holders have reported difficulty contacting Chimes customer service and have been unable to access their funds for at least a period of time.

Key Components Of The Chime Strategy

Theres a tendency to think of challenger banks and even direct banks as all about slick mobile apps, free or low-fee products, and higher rates. Chime meets the first two criteria, but even when it was economically feasible to offer high rates, the company never played that card. Launched in mid 2014 by Britt and co-founder Ryan King, Chime did for a time use high-rewards as a marketing hook, but realized quickly that wasnt the best approach.

As you dig deeper into the Chime strategy, one notable thing emerges: Essentially the disruptor in one regard is following a classic banking strategy but with a few key differences.

Chimes strategy in a nutshell:

  • Build a modern tech stack.
  • Provide great mobile user experience.
  • Become consumers choice for their primary checking account.
  • Offer no-fee services enabled by low-cost technology and no branches.
  • Generate revenue from interchange.

Many challenger banks have a similar strategy, so why has Chime been so successful?

During various media briefings, Chris Britt has provided some illuminating details.

Britt, who gained banking and payments expertise working for Visa and Green Dot, felt that traditional banking wasnt serving the consumer well, particularly the people in the huge middle income market.

This Chime card lets people without a strong credit history access a secured credit card which they can use to build credit history, and improve their access to lending and credit lines in future.

Which Has Less Fees

Chime Bank Review 2021

Chime wins this category without a doubt Chase has tons of fees, fees for simply not receiving enough money every month into the account, or not holding enough money in the account, or slightly overspending your account, using atms not owned by Chase Bank, etc.

Meanwhile Chime has virtually no fees You can withdraw from any Money-Pass Alliance ATM for no fee, which are generally available at every single Walgreens, H-E-B, CVS, Whole Foods, and gas station so finding a fee-free atm with Chime is super easy and convenient, you simply can open their app or look on their website to find a fee-free atm near you.

Chime also has no account minimums and you get charged no monthly fee even if you only have $1 in the account and even if you receive no money into the account during the month they also allow up to $100 of overdraft without penalty, so if you make a mistake and overspend it shouldnt be a problem.
