Observations From The Fintech Snark Tank
The banking-as-a-service space is hot, and getting even hotter with recent announcements from:
- Railsbank. This UK-based firm recently raised $37 million of equity funding to support further growth and expansion into the US. According to Lawrence Wintermeyer, writing in Forbes, platform now includes Cards-as-a-Service, Compliance-as-a-Service, and the worlds first Credit Card-as-a-Service proposition.
- Moov. This open source embedded banking platform has raised more than $30 million in the past four months. A blog post from Andreesen Horowitz says that Moov makes sending, receiving, and storing money modular, composable, extensible, and highly reliable .
- Amount. The company announced in early December that it had raised a $81 million Series C round led by Goldman Sachs. According to 11:FS Simon Taylor, Amount’s customer is likely to be a regional bank, which has historically complex IT infrastructure and needs a neat abstraction
- Stripe. In an article titled Is Stripe Treasury game over for banking as a service?, Tearsheet reported that Stripe has partnered up with Goldman Sachs and Citibank to provide Stripe Treasury, a banking-as-a-service API that will enable merchants and vendors to make ACH and wire transfers through Stripes banking partners.
Is it really game over though? Not by a long shot, as far as Green Dot CEO Dan Henry is concerned.

Adding Money To A Green Dot Card
There are six ways to add money to a Green Dot card. You must make an initial deposit at the time of purchase, after which you can set up free direct deposit with your employer, transfer funds from outside bank accounts, deposit cash at participating retailers and cash checks through the mobile app.
One big perk of having a Green Dot card is getting paid up to two days faster compared with a paper check when you sign up for direct deposit. In addition, certain government benefits, such as federal tax refunds, Social Security income and unemployment payments, can also post to your Green Dot account up to four days earlier than usual.
In other cases, funds availability varies based on the type of deposit and when its received. For example, cash deposits made at participating retailers are generally available within 10 minutes of being reported to Green Dot, whereas youll have to wait up to five business days to access funds from a mobile check deposit.

Green Dot Considers Turning On Bnpl
When you look at the balance sheet of Green Dots bank, you can see that the vast majority of its assets are in government securities, other than loans that chiefly come from the operations of the local bank, which still operates as Bonneville Bank, in Utah. That concentration in securities in part is because of the high turnover of balances the securities are generally safe and liquid but also because historically Green Dot was a deposit-oriented operation.
Henry would like to activate more of the asset side of the balance sheet and he sees buy now, pay later financing as a potential way to do that. It is still early days in his thinking, he says, but BNPL seems like a good match for the needs of the typical customer of Green Dot and its partners. Short-term finance for people who need affordable payments and flexibility is what BNPL is meant to be about.
In addition, though Henry didnt address this, BNPL industry experts note that the fintech vendors of this service typically sell off their credit. Green Dot, with a bank with short-term deposits behind it, could move those funds from government securities to short-term lending, potentially improving returns by booking the BNPL assets.
With better technology in place, such things could be possible. But Henry says the companys basic approaches will continue. The bigger picture for me five years from now is to be the biggest bank in the country that nobodys ever heard of.
