What Affects Your Options
Your ability to see your checks and obtain a copy of checks depends on your bank’s policies, the type of checking account you have, the different types of checks you write and what preferences you’ve set up. For example, with some checking accounts, you can just log in, go to your transactions and see a check image. With other accounts, you need to either pay a fee per image or month, or meet certain balance minimums.
For example, Bank of America charges a $3 monthly check-imaging fee on its basic checking account if you want to get images of your checks on the paper statements sent to your home. If you opt for one of their upgraded checking accounts , check imaging is free.

Use A Plain Dark Background
“A light check on a white table is very hard for the computer to see,” Helcl says. Busy patterns even the speckly grain of a granite kitchen countertop make a bad background for a check photo. One rejected check that Helcl examined had been photographed “on top of a plastic bag of walnuts that was on a Batman print tablecloth,” he says. All the reflections and angles made for a terrible photo and a failed deposit.

Scanning The Check Using Only The Smartphone
Select Scan Front of Check with the App. The app will almost certainly change to landscape orientation. Orient your phone so that its long axis is parallel with the long axis of the check.
Place the phone on the check with the phone’s camera in the exact center. Then, using both hands, raise the phone very slowly, being careful to keep the phone level and raise it straight up. When the entire check is visible to the app, the app’s autocapture feature will take the picture. In most cases, you will know that the picture has been snapped because you will hear VoiceOver say “Portrait” when your phone is returned to portrait orientation. I have been successful with this method but it usually takes quite a few tries.
If the app does timeout, there is usually a Retry Autocapture button and a Manual Capture button. Wells Fargo didn’t seem to mind how many times I retried the autocapture. I found the Manual Capture considerably more difficult because I had to decide myself when to take the picture, and double tapping on the Take Picture button was not easy while holding the phone with two hands and trying not to move it very much.
Benefits Of Credit Union Surveillance Equipment

Crime investigation In instances of robbery and fraud, recorded bank security camera images can be used to identify and track down suspects.
Prevent check fraud IP video surveillance systems with advanced video analytics such as facial recognition are helping to fight the problem of check fraud at banks by recording transaction data and capturing images of offenders. This information can be used to identify criminals and helps in protecting customer accounts.
Combat “phantom ATM withdrawals” It’s not uncommon for bank customers to report suspicious ATM withdrawals where money has been taken from their accounts without their knowledge. Bank security cameras which record every ATM transaction can provide answers.

Difficulty Making Mobile Check Deposits Heres Why
Mobile check deposit is a feature many of us love when we can get it to work. Below are a few tips if you experience issues with completing your Mobile Check Deposit:
How Does Mobile Check Deposit Work
Mobile check deposit works using remote deposit capture technology. When you take a photo of your check, its similar to scanning a photograph or document to make a digital copy on your computer.
The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act allows banks to accept substitute checks for deposit if theyre the legal equivalent of a physical check. Thats what remote deposit capture allows forthe substitution of a digital form of your check for a paper one.
Once you scan and upload the photos of your check and submit your deposit request, the information is encrypted and transmitted to your bank. The check then follows the standard steps for processing and clearing so the funds can deposit to your account.

What Are Some Tips For Making A Mobile Deposit
- Ensure that the surface contrasts with the color of the check. A solid dark background against a white/light colored check works best.
- Make sure that you have ample lighting and avoid using the flash on your camera. If the camera is triggering the flash, then you need more light. Also, be careful of any shadows being casted on the check if using lighting from directly overhead.
- Ensure that your camera lens is clean. Clean your camera lens with a soft cloth and some glass cleaner. Pocket lint and dust can build up on camera lens which can degrade photo quality.
- Once deposited, keep your check in a secure area for at least 2 weeks to ensure that your deposit has been credited to your account. Once you confirm it has been deposited, destroy the check.

Get Your Check Ready For Deposit
Depositing a check online isnt exactly the same as depositing it at a branch or ATM. But you still have to sign the back of the check for the deposit to be valid. You also should make sure all the information on the front of the check is correct.
Depending on your bank account, you may also have to write something extra on the back to denote that its a mobile deposit. For example, you may have to add for mobile deposit or for remote deposit capture below your signature.
Also, make sure the check is legible. Your mobile device needs to be able to read the check via the camera when youre ready to deposit it.
Your Bank Can Place A Hold On Mobile
Just like a regular check, your bank can place a hold on the funds that you deposit via your smartphone. A common reason for a so-called delayed availability of funds is simply depositing your check too late in the day. If you miss the cutoff time for check deposits, then you might have to wait an extra business day for the check to clear and have access to your funds.

Tips For Using Mobile Check Deposit
If you think mobile check deposit could be a useful banking tool, there are a few things to keep in mind when using it.
First, review your banks funds availability and deposit limit policies, so youll know how much you can deposit and when your money will be accessible. Also, note any types of checks the bank excludes from depositing through mobile banking.
While mobile check deposit is typically free, ask your bank whether there are any fees involved. For instance, if your bank gives you the option to make an express deposit using your mobile device, you may have to pay a fee for accelerated processing.
Next, make sure that your signature on paper checks is legible and that the photos you take are clear. You also should double-check the amount of the check against what youve entered to avoid a mismatch when trying to submit a deposit. Simple errors like these can cause your mobile check deposit to be rejected.
Finally, dont discard the paper check immediately. If something goes wrong with your mobile check deposit, you may need to deposit the paper check instead. Hold on to the check and, after the mobile check deposit clears, you can safely destroy the paper check or void it and keep it on file.
Why Does The Bank Place Deposits On Hold
A deposit hold is a period of time, usually around two business days, when the bank holds the funds you deposited by check. This delay may seem unnecessary, but it can actually help you. It helps prevent you from spending the money and then having to repay that money if the check turns out to be fraudulent or had to be returned.

Check Deposits At An Atm
Depending on your bank or credit union, and the type of ATM, you may be able to deposit your check at an ATM. Just like when you visit a branch, youll need to start at an ATM by endorsing the back of the check.
Then you can use your bank-issued debit card to access your account info, follow the prompts for a check deposit, and submit your check directly into the designated slot.
Unlike visiting a bank branch, you can deposit a check into any ATM at any time, as long as the ATM accepts checks. Just like when visiting your branch though, you may still have to wait around two business days before having access to all the funds depending on the amount of the check. In fact, it may take even longer if you deposit the check at an ATM your bank or credit union doesnt own.
For that reason, it can be beneficial to visit an ATM owned by your bank. Staying in your banks network can also be a better choice because it may save you money on ATM fees.
