Paypal Charge On Bank Statement But No Paypal Transaction
I have spent hours trying to find the answer. What answers I found lead me nowhere. Sorry for the rant but as I write this I’m frustrated with the lack of help you get from PayPal.
I was checking my bank statement online and noticed a $5.99 charge from paypal on 4-3-20. It didn’t ring a bell so I went to my PayPal account to check on recent activity but there was no transaction during that time or the amount of $5.99 listed.
Went to paypal to report it but to report a problem you have to choose a transaction………..guess what………..as I said above there was no transaction listed on paypal but there was a charge on my bank statement. Frustrating!
Below is a screen shot of the charge on my bank statement. This a paypal number.
Understanding The Payment Systems
To answer these questions we must first understand the payment systems themselves. For a typical consumer bank account, a majority of the electronic transfers are handled via the Automated Clearing House . A lot has been written about ACH and more directly NACHA, the standards body that guides how ACH payments are formatted when being sent between banks.
Although a standard for ACH formats exists and is widely supported, there is no equivalent agreement for how the payment might appear on a recipient’s bank statement.

One of the most annoying is the paper statement fee.
This is a fee that many banks charge as online and mobile banking have become prevalent.
You see, as convenient as online banking is for consumers, its a big expense reduction strategy by the banks. They don’t have to pay for paper and postage to send monthly statements to you.

The statement charge will begin with KICKSTARTER: followed by the first 9 characters of the name of the project you backed. Although we format our charge descriptions in this way, your financial institution might adjust how this appears on your statement.

Why Do I See Multiple Charges For Different Amounts When I Only Placed One Order
Even though you placed a single order on the seller’s website, your purchase may be split into multiple shipments or even multiple orders. Because we charge for items when they are shipped, this can result in multiple charges however, the total amount charged will add up to the amount displayed when you placed your order.
Some sellers ask Amazon to fulfill their orders in these cases, we stock these items at several different fulfillment centers around the country. When these items are in stock at different fulfillment centers, we may send your order in separate shipments to make sure you get your items as quickly as possible.
The order summary in Your Account will show you the amount charged for each shipment, as well as the total charged per order.

You can cancel the transaction but if its already been processed, its too late. You would have to wait until it gets added to the blockchain.

What Should I Do If There Are Unauthorized Charges On My Credit Card Account
Contact your bank right away. To limit your liability, it is important to notify the bank promptly upon discovering any unauthorized charge. You may notify the bank in person, by telephone, or in writing. The bank should have provided you with information in your account agreement on how to notify it when you believe there is unauthorized use of your credit card. The address to write to regarding unauthorized charges may be different from where you send your payment.
After receiving your notification, the bank must conduct a reasonable investigation of the claim before it can claim that no billing error occurred or that a different billing error occurred. Actions that a bank may take in reviewing a claim include the following:
- Looking at the transaction in light of other purchases
- Reviewing whether goods were delivered to your residence or place of business
- Comparing signatures
- Requesting a copy of a police report, if one was filed
- Requesting documentation to assist in validating the claim
- Requesting a signed written statement from the cardholder or authorized user
- Requesting information about the cardholder’s knowledge of the person who allegedly used the card or of that person’s authority to do so.
The bank must notify you of the results of its investigation within two complete billing cycles or 90 days after receiving the notice, whichever is less.
Refer to 12 CFR 1026 “Truth in Lending “ for more information.

Whats In A Bank Statement Entry
To be concise, banks often take individual fields from an ACH payment and join them together on a single line to form the entries. Each bank tends to have its own method. What might appear as AMERICAN EXPRESS ACH PMT 190417 A1110 SAMUEL I AARONS at one bank would show up as AMERICAN EXPRESS DES:ACH PMT INDN: SAMUEL I AARONS CO ID: XXX123 PPD at a different bank.
There are a few fields that always appear on a consumer’s bank statement. These are:
- Company Name
- Company Entry Description
- Receiving Individual Name
The appearance of those bits of info is mandated by a combination of Regulation E, which lays out federal guidelines for electronic payments, and NACHA Operating Guidelines, which dictate the need for these fields to be included by all participants of the ACH. Beyond these three fields, some banks will choose to include a small set of other fields that may aid a consumer in tracking down the specific purpose of a payment. But these other fields often end up adding to the general confusion. Readers of a bank statement must figure out where one field ends and another begins. Letâs take a look at some examples.
Bank of America bank statements
For Bank of America customers, the task of understanding entries is made easier by the presence of certain tags DES:, INDN:, CO ID: that map to the corresponding ACH “Company Entry Description,””Receiving Individual Name,” and “Company Identification” respectively.

Find Charges For Google Products
When you buy something from Google, youll find a charge on your account that starts with “GOOGLE*” and ends with the Google product or another descriptor.
Heres how some common Google purchases might appear on your bank statement.
Tip: Some of these descriptors may appear shortened.
Why Do I Only See It With Certain Purchases
Some kinds of merchants require preauthorization, while others don’t. Certain retailers typically gas stations, hotels and rent-a-car companies dont yet know the final cost of your purchase when they accept your card.
For instance, when you initially swipe your card at a gas pump, the station doesn’t know how much it’ll take to actually fill your tank. That’s why the merchant preauthorizes your card that way, they’ll be pretty sure that you wont charge more than your credit limit will allow.

I Dont Have A Battlenet Account
If you are not a Blizzard customer and you see charges from Blizzard, your credit card may have been compromised. You are likely to see charges from other merchants that you dont recognize either. Talk to your financial institution as soon as possible to report your card as stolen and contact us.
Where Do Those $1 Charges Come From
If you look at your list of pending purchases, youll probably discover that a random $1 charge bumps right up against a charge from a gas station, hotel or rental car company. That’s because the $1 charge is actually a temporary preauthorization from your credit card company, basically giving the merchant the green light to charge your card for the full amount when your final purchase is made. By preauthorizing your card $1, the card company doesn’t have to place a larger hold against your account.
The $1 charge disappears when the final amount youve spent at a hotel or gas station is no longer pending. The preauthorization is lifted, and the $1 charge doesnt show up on your final statement.
