Chase The Outer Banks Wild Horses
Outer Banks is famous for sighting wild horses the Spanish Mustangs. Usually spotted roaming freely around the Corolla beach, they are a sight to behold.
These beautiful brown creatures with long mane can make you run from one end to another just to get one glimpse of them.
You can even see tour jeeps chasing their way over sand dunes to make their tourists satisfied.
Its true that they have more ideas about spots to capture these wild horses, but we felt they were too expensive and not worth the money.
They charge about $50 for adults and $30 for kids. The wild horse tours can be booked online.
We were able to see the Mustangs on Corolla beach while driving. So be a little patient and keep your eyes open and you will be lucky.

Most visitors to the Outer Banks cannot wait to get on the water in some way, which is why boat tours are popular. From adventure tours and sunset sails to air boat rides and even fishing charters, there is a boat excursion for just about every interest.
One of the most popular boating excursions is deep sea fishing since Hatteras is one of the top fishing departure locations on the North Carolina coast. The best departure points for any of the boat tour excursions are Pirate’s Cove, Oregon Inlet, and Hatteras.
If you depart from the Hatteras Marina be sure to grab dinner first at Dinky’s Restaurant at the docks, where you can taste the day’s freshest seafood. You will find local operators in each of those towns or you can stop by the Outer Banks Welcome Center to pick up pamphlets on regional operators.

Walk Through The Elizabethan Gardens
We were SO excited to enjoy the outdoors, changing our beach scenery, for an activity. The Elizabethan Gardens were gorgeous and the perfect place to diversify the landscapes we were visiting.
The gardens are located on the north side of Roanoke Island. It was only a 10 minute drive from our hotel in the same town, The Tranquil House Inn.
Leave about an hour of time to walk around these beautiful botanical gardens, if not a little more. Youll probably want to visit at a leisurely pace and take advantage of sitting on a bench for a little to enjoy the scenery and nature a while.
The cost of an adult ticket is $9 and parking is free. Theyre open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm during October.
There are over 20 points of interest on the map of the gardens as well as 21 place that are a part of their OnCell audio tour.
Our favorite spots within the Elizabethan Gardens were:
A perk of going to Elizabethan Gardens in the Outer Banks in October, especially an hour before they closed, was that there were only about 10 other people there we saw as we walked around. It was practically empty! It felt like we had the gardens to ourselves.
Outer Banks Water Activities
The Outer Banks owe their existence to the elements. The same core ingredients at the heart of your perfect beach daydream also bring it to life. Two of the planets big driving ocean currents, the cool Labrador from the North and the warm Gulf Stream running up from the South, converge off our coast teeming with fish. Spend your days casting a line either onshore or offshore in the sound or blue ocean waters with many different types of fishing available. Or grab your snorkel, fins, floats for some fun in the water or hop on a boat. Rent your favorite water sport gear or book a water tour to experience the OBX in a different light.
Eons of underwater kneading have brought this family of islands up from the deep, groomed and guided by the whimsy of ever-present breeze. Effectively, what you are left with are more than 100 miles of beaches on islands one mile wide, most of them protected from development, preserved for recreation and wildlife. Always close to the water, there are no bad seats. Find a full list of beach and sound accesses here.

Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve Outer Banks North Carolina
Home to more than a dozen species of rare plants and animals, the Buxton Woods Coastal Reserve encompasses approximately 2,500 acres of land on Hatteras Island. Stepping into the Buxton Woods is like stepping back in time the land is almost completely undeveloped, just it was thousands of years ago. Most visitors head to the interpretative trail that starts just outside the village of Buxton, but plenty of unmarked trails wind their way through the woods as well. These trails can be quite confusing, so visitors who want to explore them are advised to bring a GPS system or a cellphone.

It is worth noting that the Outer Banks is no stranger to hurricanes. The area has experienced many throughout the years, causing damage of various levels. If you are looking to live in the Outer Banks, you want a home that provides enough space for living. Since it will not be a vacation house or a brief visit, you will be moving all of your everyday essentials and then some. For most people, that type of move necessitates a space that has liveable square footage. Typically, this includes at least two bedrooms, more than one bathroom, and a waterfront. If youre going to live by the water, you might as well get to see it.
Living in paradise is a dream come true for many. But not all dreams are feasible to incorporate into your everyday life. When you are looking to relocate, you want to explore the potential area and ensure that it has all the elements that you enjoy in life.
For some, this includes easy access to grocery stores. Other people desire to have variety in different restaurants and cuisine types.
Stroll The Duck Boardwalk
We did not have a lot of time to walk the entire 0.6 miles of the Duck boardwalk. But its one of the popular things to do in Duck.
Take your time, enjoy the calmer waters of the sound, peruse in the shops you pass by.
Near the boardwalk is the Treehouse Coffee Co which does great coffee and good breakfast food, especially if you love biscuits. They have an outside sitting area under the trees.

Weather On The Outer Banks
The ocean is a wonderful moderator of our Southern climate, acting as a cooling factor in the summer and a warming one in the winter months. We still have four distinct seasons here, but we rarely have winter snows.
We all know the Wright Brothers visited the Outer Banks to fly their airplane because of the natural winds. Those same winds are still here, acting to mitigate the warmth of our Southern summers. However, they are not always so nice in the winter, adding a bit of a wind chill in the colder months.
The Outer Banks typically is 3-6 degrees cooler in the summer than our inland neighbors and we are a little warmer in the winter. I moved here from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and it took me a summer to adjust to the humidity of Coastal North Carolina, but eventually I acclimated.
Graveyard Of The Atlantic Museum
The Outer Banks have a rich maritime history, and many of their stories are told in the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. The museum’s exhibits focus on topics like the area’s shipwrecks, pirates, explorers, and involvement in the American Civil War highlights include a German Enigma machine rescued from a sunken submarine during World War II and an exhibit on General Billy Mitchell. Special events and programs are held on a regular basis, including a daily scavenger hunt suitable for visitors of all ages. Admission is by donation, and the museum is open every weekday.

Onward To Portsmouth Cape Lookout And Shackleford Banks
You can keep going south if you have a boat and visit Portsmouth Island, which is relatively isolated and south of Ocracoke. In addition, you can ferry from Ocracoke or Atlantic in the Cedar Island area in Carteret County, near Morehead City.
The islands south of Portsmouth are part of Cape Lookout National Seashore. This area is more commonly known as the Crystal Coast and is more accessible to reach via Harkers Island or Beaufort in Carteret County.
At the southern end of those protected lands are Cape Lookout Lighthouse and the Shackleford Banks across the water. At Shackleford, you can relax on the beach and, on a good day, watch the wild horses as they live their best lives.
Beautiful Living On Roanoke Island
If you consider a move to the Outer Banks, Roanoke Island should be on your list of considerations. Many cities on the island choose from, including Manteo, Fort Raleigh City, and Wanchese. Roanoke Island is a more inward location than other areas of the Outer Banks, with another island separating it from the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. Although it is an island itself and still surrounded by water, you will not get the same quality of beaches and waves as you would in other OBX areas due to its geographical location. If you were directly on the Atlantic Ocean, you would get the experience of seeing the high waves that come with it. With Roanoke Island being more sheltered, you dont get this luxury. However, what the area lacks in waves makes up for in other beauty forms.
Roanoke Island is home to the Lost Colony and housed one of the first indigenous groups. There are beautiful wooded areas on the island, which is a vast difference from the aesthetic of the other OBX areas. The main areas of Roanoke Island have a classical downtown, small-town feel.
Similar to Hatteras Island, you wont find many chain stores or franchises in Roanoke Island. There are many different types of small businesses, boutiques, and locally-owned and operated establishments, including various restaurants. Following the same theme as other OBX regions, there are many seafood restaurants. However, you will also find barbecue, homestyle, pizza, and many others.
