Hsbc Is Closing What Will Happen To Your Checking And Savings Accounts
British bank HSBC Holdings PLC announced Wednesday that it will sell most of its retail locations across the U.S., reducing 148 branches down to 58 and winding down an additional 35 to 40 branches. The remaining locations will be repurposed into international wealth management centers. The bank is repositioning itself from retail banking to focus on the banking and wealth management needs of its high-net-worth clients, The Wall Street Journal reported.
HSBC will go from 1.4 million customers to about 300,000 in the U.S. and will not be servicing customers with basic checking and savings accounts or balances below $75,000, or businesses with a turnover of $5 million or less. The bank will keep clients with Jade accounts holding at least $1 million in cash and investments and Premier accounts with more than $75,000, according to WSJ.
The bank has entered into a sales agreement with Citizens Bank and Cathay Bank to sell parts of its business, the company stated. Roughly 800,000 East Coast customer accounts will be transferred to Citizens Bank, and about 50,000 West Coast accounts will be switched to Cathay Bank by the first quarter of next year, WSJ noted. Customers living abroad will also have accounts transferred unless they meet HSBC minimum requirements. The company will continue online and in-branch services until then.

$35 Billion Currency Scheme
In July 2016, the United States Department of Justice charged two executives from HSBC Bank over an alleged $3.5 billion currency scheme which defrauded HSBC clients and “manipulated the foreign exchange market to benefit themselves and their bank”. “Mark Johnson and Stuart Scott, both British citizens, are being accused”. “Johnson was arrested late Tuesday at JFK International Airport in New York City.” “Stuart Scott, who was HSBC’s European head of foreign exchange trading in London until December 2014, is accused of the same crimes. A warrant was issued for Scott’s arrest, but he fled to Britain. In July 2018 the High Court of Justice ruled against extraditing him to the United States since most of the alleged crimes took place in Britain and because Scott has no significant connection to the United States.

Support For China’s Security Law For Hong Kong
In June 2020, on the eve of the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, HSBC took the rare step of wading into political issues by publicly backing Beijing’s controversial new national security law for Hong Kong. The chief executive for HSBC’s Asia-Pacific division, Peter Wong, signed a petition supporting the law and stated in a post on Chinese social media that HSBC “respects and supports all laws that stabilise Hong Kong’s social order.”
Though HSBC moved its headquarters to London in 1993, Hong Kong remains its largest market accounting for 54% of its profit, a third of its global revenue, and 50,000 local staff. In response, Joshua Wong, a top Hong Kong pro-democracy activist decried the bank’s position stating that HSBC’s stance demonstrates “how China will use the national security law as new leverage for more political influence over foreign business community in this global city.”Alistair Carmichael, the U.K. chairman of the All Parliamentary Group on Hong Kong, said HSBC made a serious error by bending to China’s will regarding the security law, calling it “a colossal misjudgment” since it would be seen as a large British corporation advocating for “a fairly flagrant breach of international law” when banks rely on a rules-based system.Human Rights Watch alleged that “the new national security law will deal the most severe blow to the rights of people in Hong Kong since the territory’s transfer to China in 1997.”

How To Bank With Hsbc
HSBC makes it very easy to open accounts online, even if you do not reside in one of the eight states served by less than 150 bank branches. Once you have opened an account, both the online banking portal and mobile app make it easy to handle all your transactions, even if you cant make it to a brick-and-mortar branch. However, you may find its a little difficult to find fee-free ATMs, so you may need to do some reconnaissance to access your cash if you do not live near an HSBC branch.
As a multinational bank, HSBC has a great deal to recommend it for the right customer. International travelers, those who maintain large bank balances, and those looking for a bank to handle their mortgage as well as their regular banking needs would all be well served by HSBCs offerings. The wide array of products and services mean there is something for almost everyone, but it is clear that most of its products are geared toward wealthier clients. The focus on higher-income clients is part of what may make this bank a bad fit for a lot of average customers.
Acquisition Of Midland Bank
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation acquired a 14.9 per cent equity interest in Midland Bank plc in 1987, and a strong working relationship developed. In 1992, HSBC Holdings plc acquired full ownership of Midland Bank. It was one of the largest acquisitions in banking history, giving HSBC the major foothold in Europe that it needed to complement its existing business in Asia and the Americas. Midland Bank was renamed HSBC Bank in 1999 as part of the adoption of the HSBC brand throughout the Group.
Through its sister company HSBC UK Bank plc , the bank maintains a network of 594 branches throughout England and Wales, with a much smaller presence in Scotland and Northern Ireland where local banks tend to dominate. In recent years, branches have undergone a programme of rolling refurbishment, with a focus on open-plan areas, increased self-service ‘Express Banking’ machines, ATMs, and an improved layout. Branches also feature HSBC Live, a radio station specifically produced for the bank by media company Immedia in Newbury, Berkshire.
In mid-2003, HSBC became the first UK high-street lender to offer homebuying products in compliance with Sharia law, which prohibits the charging or payment of interest. The range now includes a bank account, home insurance policy , and home finance.
As part of setting up the new bank, a new board and legal structure was created. In November 2016, Clara Furse was named as the first Chairwoman of HSBC UK.

If you are looking for a high return on your savings, Everyday Savings is not the best choice, as the interest rate is just 0.01% APY. This is comparable to the rates offered at other large national banks, such as Chase and Bank of America.

History Of Hsbc China
The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation established its Shanghai branch office on 3 April 1865, previous to other upstarts of HSBC, and indeed, as part of the historic English investment of Eastern Asian nations in the 19th century. Apart from the period 19411945, during which Japan forced HSBC and other foreign-invested banks to leave the local market, it has had a continuous presence in the city. HSBC was historically housed in one of the largest and most impressive buildings on The Bund, Shanghai’s boulevard formerly known as the “Wall Street of the Orient”.
In April 1955, HSBC handed over this office to the Communist government, and its activities were continued in rented premises. Its activities were mainly in inward remittances and export bills until the economic reforms of the late 1970s. Chinese authorities had offered to lease HSBC its old headquarters on The Bund in 1995 but the offer was turned down. In 2000, HSBC China moved into HSBC Tower across the river in the Pudong area of Shanghai. In 2010, HSBC China’s headquarters moved out of the HSBC Tower and moved into HSBC Building in Shanghai IFC.

Origins And Until 2000
The Hongkong and Shanghai Bank was founded by Thomas Sutherland in the then-British colony of British Hong Kong on 3 March 1865, and in Shanghai a month later, benefiting from the start of trading into China, including opium trading. It was formally incorporated as The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation by an Ordinance of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong on 14 August 1866. In 1980, HSBC acquired a 51% shareholding in US-based , which it extended to full ownership in 1987. On 6 October 1989, it was renamed by the Legislative Council, by an amendment to its governing ordinance originally made in 1929, to The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, and became registered as a regulated bank with the then Banking Commissioner of the Government of Hong Kong.
Major acquisitions in South America started with the purchase of the Banco Bamerindus of Brazil for $1 billion in March 1997 and the acquisition of Roberts SA de Inversiones of Argentina for $600 million in May 1997. In May 1999, HSBC expanded its presence in the United States with the purchase of Republic National Bank of New York for $10.3 billion.
