Is There A Difference Between A Prepaid Debit Card And A Prepaid Credit Card

71 Online Printable Debit Card Template for Ms Word for ...

No difference! Both terms refer to prepaid cards, but both are confusing. A prepaid credit card implies that the card has a credit line, but prepaid cards do not .

A prepaid debit card is better, but it implies that, like a Visa debit card, it is backed by a checking account, which it isnt.

Its also important to understand that a secured credit card is different from a prepaid one. A secured card requires a refundable deposit, but it does extend credit to you up to the amount of the deposit. A prepaid card also requires a deposit, but it doesnt secure a credit line. Rather, thats the money you spend when you use the card.

Another difference is that a secured card can help you build credit, whereas a prepaid card cannot.

Why do these terms pop up at all? Some of it is marketing, as card issuers attempt to compete for online search results. In other words, there is no expectation that the average search engine user clearly understands the nuances of these terms.

How Can I Participate In The Lottery Games

To participate in the lottery, you must buy a lottery ticket. Typically, a lottery ticket costs a few dollars, and if you win, you will win the sum of accumulated money, called the jackpot. You win the jackpot if the numbers on your lottery ticket match the numbers drawn by the lottery on a given day specified by your ticket. In the case that more than one person has the winning numbers, the jackpot will be split. The odds of winning the lottery are slim about 1 in 14 million but the prospect of winning still draws in millions of Americans every year.

Lotteries are run by individual states. There isnt a national lottery. At this time, lotteries are run by 45 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The six states of Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, and Utah do not offer state lotteries. There are also two multi-state lottery games,

Megamillions and Powerball are available in nearly all jurisdictions that offer state-level lottery games. Some states participate in smaller multi-state lottery games as well. You can purchase a lottery ticket in any state that operates a lottery game as long as you are at least 18 years old. There are few other restrictions to worry about. You do not have to be a U.S. citizen. You do not need to live in the state in which you purchased the ticket, nor do you have to live in the United States. As long as you are 18, you are eligible to purchase and win the lottery.

      What Is A Debit Card

A debit card is a payment card that deducts money directly from your checking account to pay for purchases instead of using cash. U.S. Bank issues a debit card that is directly connected to your checking account. A debit card can also be used to get cash and make other ATM transactions. U.S. Bank debit cards offer zero fraud liability and security with contactless and mobile payments.

The Case For Cash Back Debit Cards

First off, lets clear the air: a cash back debit card willrarely earn more for everyday shopping than a cash back credit card. Most debit cards will give you around 1% back, which is less than the earn rate on Canadas top cash back cards.

That said, a cash back debit card trumps its credit card counterpart in one important instance: when the cardholder is saddled with credit card debt.

Unlike debit cards, credit cards give you a line of credit. For that reason, they can delude you into thinking you have more money to spend than you actually do. When that happens you make purchases you cant pay back immediately. Your credit card has a grace period , but if you dont pay off your statement balance before the due date, youll incur interest for every day you fail to repay what you borrowed.

Thats when your cash back becomes essentially useless. You may have earned $100 on your $5,000 purchase, but if you pay $200 in interest charges, youre down $100.

In this case, a cash back debit card would be a better fit. You still get cash backdespite the earn rate being lowerand you wont risk borrowing money you cant afford to pay back.

Can I Build Credit With A Prepaid Card

Just as prepaid cards cant hurt your credit, neither will they help you build it. Credit refers to debt, which is money you owe to creditors and lenders. A prepaid card incurs no debt, so when it comes to your credit score, prepaid cards are as neutral as Switzerland.

A card issuer must report your account activity to at least one credit bureau for it to help build your credit history, which prepaid card issuers do not do.

However, if you are willing to concede that building credit is a long-term endeavor, you may consider prepaid card usage as the first step on the journey. How? By giving you the opportunity to develop good money-management habits:

For whatever reason, schools today just dont teach personal finance. Its up to you to develop good financial habits, and using prepaid cards can be a helpful step in that direction.

The Growing Number Of Instantly Issued Cards

Nearly a quarter of U.S. banks with less than $1 billion in assets and 29 percent of credit unions offer instant card issuing services, according to a report from the Aite Group produced by senior analyst Tiffani Montez.

At the nations largest banks, 39 percent instantly issue cards. PNC, for example, says more than 5,000 debit cards are printed and handed out daily.

The three largest U.S. banks, Bank of America, Citibank and Wells Fargo, all offer temporary replacement debit cards in some branches, according to the Journal. The temporary ATM cards Chase issues cannot be used as a debit card in stores.

If youre preparing to switch banks, consider whether an instant-issue debit card is a feature youd want. Youll probably need to ask before you open a savings account whether that bank or credit union offers the instant-issue service.

More institutions are expected to offer instant payment cards in the future. But Montez doesnt expect all banks to jump on board.

At some point, banks and credit unions will start to look at how they can digitally issue debit and , she says.

What Is The Best Prepaid Card To Get

Prepaid cards are definitely not one-size-fits-all, so the best prepaid card to get depends on whats important to you. Most folks prefer a card with minimal fees, but other considerations include:

      • Flexibility: Cards may offer multiple options for monthly or pay-as-you-go usage fees. We like the NetSpend® Visa® Prepaid Card for its flexible usage fees. This Visa prepaid card can be used everywhere Visa is accepted.
      • Budgeting: Some cards offer online/app tools to help you manage your money. The tools that accompany the Bluebird® American Express® Prepaid Debit Account let you categorize, set spending limits, and track up to four cards, both online and through the phone app.
      • Cash back rewards: Its a rare prepaid card that gives you cash rewards, but a top one is the Serve® American Express® Prepaid Debit Account. This card gives you 1% cash back on all purchases made online or in stores.
      • Saving: If you agree that your credit card company should pay you interest on your unused card balance, then check out The Mango Prepaid Mastercard®. You can earn 6% interest when you meet certain requirements.
      • Direct deposit: We think the PayPal Prepaid Mastercard® is your best bet if you arrange for direct deposit of your paychecks and/or government benefits. Using the card can shave two days off the time it takes to receive your money. You can transfer funds between the card and your PayPal account, but you do need a PayPal account.

What Kinds Of Costs Are Associated With Debit Cards

There may be fees for using your debit card. Examples: Some banks charge a fee if you enter a PIN to conduct a transaction instead of signing your name. You may trigger a fee if you overdraw your account using your debit card, just as you would if you “bounced” a check. Or, there could be a charge if you use your debit card as an ATM card at a machine that is not operated by your financial institution. As with other bank products, your financial institution must provide disclosures explaining the possible fees associated with a debit card. Be sure to read the disclosures to avoid an unexpected fee.

      Not Just For Misplaced Cards

There are other times you might benefit from instant card issuance, including:

    • After opening an account. Customers can have their card in hand and make their initial ATM deposit before they leave the branch.
    • When children are away at college. Concerned parents will know their children can access funds instead of waiting for a new debit card to arrive.
    • If a card is reported stolen or if fraudulent activity is detected. Customers who come into a branch to report a compromised card can leave with a new card, and the peace of mind of knowing their issues are being addressed.
    • The off-chance that an ATM keeps your card. In the rare instance that an ATM machine malfunctions and a card is not returned following a transaction, a new card can be generated instantly at the branch. The same is true if a customer accidentally walks away from the machine without taking his or her card and the machine pulls it in to prevent the next customer from accessing it.
    • Currently, classic orange and Virtual Wallet® debit cards can be instantly printed and made ready for immediate use. Credit cards, business debit cards and affinity debit cards currently arent eligible.

What Federal Protections Cover Consumers Who Use Debit Cards

      Debit Cards Online

The federal Electronic Fund Transfer Act protects you from errors, loss or theft of your debit card. However, unlike the Truth in Lending Act protections for credit cards, which cap a consumer’s liability for unauthorized transactions at $50, the law limits liability to $50 if the debit cardholder notifies the bank within two business days after discovering the theft. If you don’t notify your bank within those two days, you could lose up to $500, or perhaps more. In the worst-case scenario if you receive a bank statement that includes an unauthorized debit-card withdrawal and you wait more than 60 days to alert your bank you could be liable for any amounts from transactions made after that 60-day period.

The good news is that many banks don’t hold a consumer responsible for unauthorized transactions if he or she notifies the institution in a timely fashion. But remember that with a debit card, the money tapped by the thief has already been taken out of your account.
